I'm having a week to browse some of Porn-ic down on the Loire valley via Cherbourg.

Ferry gets in at about 3ish so I'm seeing a natural stopover of Rennes as an option for Sunday early evening.

I notice a few brasseries etc are open in Rennes so do I find something in Rennes for some Sunday dinner or is it a ballache and going to add an hour to the whole journey.

Another Option looks like Fougeres, it's a minor divert off the A84 and has a bit of charm to walk around for an hour or so.

On the way back we'll be visiting the Manoir de l'Automobile so that bits sorted biggrin

Both are lovely places, but I would suggest that if you want to eat on a Sunday evening, you may have a better choice in Rennes. Many (most...) restaurants don't open on Sunday evenings in France. Probably worth booking in advance, too.

We've ended up at the local kebaberie more than once on our travels!

Rennes is a vibrant place with lots of dining options. It is very much a student town. Traffic is usually busy but lots of on street parking in the old town, set your satnav and go with the flow

A few weeks ago we booked an Ibis budget hotel for a night in Rennes as a stopover on the way from Caen to Brest. We got within range to find out there was a big football match on within a couple of hours. Traffic was manic so we found another Ibis Budget 15 minutes away. We arrived to find it was on a run down trading estate, not very inviting. However the reception guy ( only staff member on site) was very helpful, he got our original booking cancelled and microwaved us a pizza. Only three cars there overnight but breakfast was ok. At least it was only 80 euros.

Good point...Rennes are playing at 415 tomorrow so likely to be kicking out about 6. That'll be Plan B Fougeres then.

I just get there with what juice I've got in the tank as well!

Might not make any difference to your plans but Rennes are playing at 5:15, not 4:15. I know as, coincidentally, I’m going to the game. We are in Rennes as my wife is running the marathon tomorrow morning.

If you google it in the UK, it says 4:15 as it’s too clever and adjusts to UK time, but the official website says 17:15.

Ah ok, I think that makes it worse tbh.

I fancied going to the Nantes game next week as the tickets are good value, is it family oriented at French games?

Sorry but I’ve absolutely no idea about the suitability of games for children.

I just happened to be in Rennes tomorrow and thought I’d give it a try as I’ve never been to a game outside the UK. Mrs TTT has been to a PSG game as she studied briefly in Paris.

Tickets were I think about £30 so not horrendous for top flight football. I paid £27 to watch Barnsley vs Reading earlier this season (more fool me!).

If you need a cheap(ish) top-up en-route from Cherbourg, take a slight detour to Valognes where there is a Le Clerc on the South side of the town with sensible fuel prices (and 98 octane petrol IIRC). It's also a nice place for a short break - park in the market place (free on Sunday) and have a mooch about.
