We've been a few times, most restaurants were mediocre, but the sandwiches and snacks in some of the supermarkets were unbelievable Spar for instance, in UK it would be a high end deli.
Looking through the photos, we had a nice meal in a place called Osteria al Mariner in Canareggio, lots of locals, and also in the University cafe/restaurant in a lovely garden.
Unpopular opinion maybe, but the water taxi from the airport is fantastic on a sunny day, and they'll take you to the nearest pontoon to your hotel, so you might get a free ride along the grand canal. Def. worth the money fpr me at the time (114 euros) but no idea of the current cost.

Consistently decent and great value. Booking is a must.
The one thing I’d say about Venice, is to simply accept that you are going to be a tourist. So have that mindset.
Complaining about the cost of a coffee in st marks square is a trope, and for sure it’s not anywhere near the best coffee and cake you’ll eat but the interaction with the staff (cafe Florian) and the experience and setting is what you’re there for. Go sit at the bar and have a Bellini in Harry’s, it’ll be made for you by a guy who’s been there half his life and will tell you some great stories. Indulge in that rather than mumble over the cost of it at a corner table.
I think accom. Is best done via Airbnb though. Sure there are some nice hotels but there are better options. I’ve stayed at the Marriott during the film festival, which is on its own island and has private boats to ferry you about. I still think the Airbnb option is better especially if the owner is local. We had one older gentleman who was telling us the various places to eat and drink and then glanced at his watch, realised it was lunchtime and took us to a wine merchant’s around the corner.

Visited in July and it was quieter and less expensive than I d prepared myself for. During the day St Marks and the Rialto is busy, but in the evening, especially after 9 it was blissfully quiet.
We stayed at the Hotel Venezia Palazzo Barocci - very reasonably priced, right on the Grand Canal next to an airport water bus stop - arrival and departure very easy, nice breakfast, roof terrace with great views.
Had a couple of lovely evening meals in little places we found wandering around - if somewhere is busy, and off the main tourist roads, it s probably decent.
We stayed 3 nights, but would have been happy to stay longer. It s just different to anywhere else.

Venice is one of the few places I've been that exceeded high expectations.
Yes, it gets busy at weekends and high season, but if you stay for the evening you almost get the city to.yourself.
Maybe I've been lucky, but I loved it.
Nowhere like it.
Training in and out for the day sounds like the worst possible option, although Italian trains are very good and cheap.
