My partner and I are going to Bucharest in a weeks time. We're staying in the Old Town Bucharest.

We would like to hire a car to do the Tranfagarasan Highway and go to Transylvania to do the usual touristy stuff but have some 4 wheeled fun getting there.

Has anyone done this and if so do you have any recommendations on legit places/companies who hire decent cars out for a day or 2?

Can’t imagine there are many sports cars to be hired -5 temperatures?

I can’t see you finding anything very sporty to hire and if you do, it won’t be much fun at this time of year.

Whatever you hire, ensure you have excellent insurance & breakdown cover. Many (but not all) of the roads are in poor condition and things like stray dogs can be a hazard out of town especially at night. They can do some real damage.

Let me put it this way: car hires in Western Europe have an exclusion list in which countries to drive. The list gets longer, the higher the vehicle class gets.
At the same time, many vehicle classes are not available to rent in Eastern European countries, and what is considered fairly midsize here is prohibitively expensive in EE.

Get that Dacia or Mondeo, and hire a horse drawn carriage when out in the sticks.

Thanks for the responses. I'll give Tate a miss wink

I wasn't aware it would be that hard but from your responses and my research it appears it is. I've seen the Transfagarasan is closed through the mountains at this time of year as well.

We'll stick to the Merc GLC we've got then and do a bit of exploring up to Transylvania. Maybe head back in the summer to do it in something more fun.

Have you ever driven in Bucharest before? Its an eye opener in that its absolute bedlam but on the flip side also weirdly organised bedlam once you're used to it. Knackered Dacia of some description is the vehicle of choice...

The roads in Bucharest are akin to Gaza. You don't want a sports car, you want a Toyota Landcruiser.

My guess is many posting have never visited my new home.

So some tips.

Based on you not knowing Transfag closes in winter my guess is you did not consider weather. Looking at the forecast you should be ok. We just had 10cm of snow but it's melting now. Should be just above 0 during the day and -3 at night. Winter in Romania can be harsh. 3 years ago I arrive to fit the kitchen to find 40cm of snow and one morning the temperature reading on the car was -20. If you come back in summer Bucharest can be very hot and humid, but is the mountains it's lovely.

Do not bother with a hire car in Bucharest. Diving is ok, you will get honked, parking however is a nightmare. Use taxis, Uber and Bolt, drivers move a lot. So if the wait time on one is high try the other.

One of the best things is everyone is very helpful and many speak english.

As for food you will find everything. Even starred restaurant but you need to book month ahead. Best tip is it, if its busy go in. You should try the tripe soup.

Where in Transylvania do you plan to visit? If Brasov confirm and I will post more tips for there.

I used these guys for a 1-year hire when I was there on assignment in 2022/23 but they do day/week rentals also; they usually have a fairly extensive range of Mercs including some higher-end stuff. Never had an issue with them.

Which reminds me. If your in Bucharest this is well worth your time.

It's virtually opposite the airport but it's a long walk as the nearest bridge to cross the road is about 500m away.

Sorry only just seen this. We're flying tomorrow. Thanks for this info, really appreciate it. Regarding Transylvania, yes around the area of Brasov is where we will likely go and to look at Bran Castle. Any tips much appreciated!

I think that was one of the ones I looked at actually. Decent collection. Quite fancied the G63 or X3M. Then sensible head kicked in and realised that money would be better spent elsewhere!
