Off to Oslo for a Norwegian friend's surprise birthday party. We arrive early Friday evening and will have most of Saturday day before the party to look around. What are the best bits to see/visit? Happy to do by foot and keep it as cheap as possible...

Just checked the flight times, we should get a chunk of Sunday up until about lunchtime if we're not too hungover.

Not much help but first time I was there I was just slack jawed at the number of gorgeous women about.

I like the fact people are understated there.
Obvious wealth however they do t flaunt it.

Kon-Tiki Museum, really intresting museum. Also next to another museum.
You just hop on the local bus to get there.

Sinnataggen - Gustav Vigeland, nude status lining a really nice walk into a big park.
You can walk there past the palace if you fancy a walk.

Oslo Opera House - modern building in the centre.
You can walk on the roof for some good views

Mendel’s Karl Johan - upmarket patisserie, nice cakes

Bake Me Up | Grensen - like Greggs, greggs prices but better offerings.

John Dee - small music venue. Great atmosphere with predominantly rock bands on. One of our highlights.
It's also on the backside of a really good food court.

Oslo Street Food - indoor food court. Great atmosphere.
Has djs on an evening as it converts into a bar / music venue.

Kon-tiki museum is good, but even better is the museum opposite, the Fram Museum. This displays Fram, the famous Norwegian polar ship used by Roald Amundsen, Nansen and other Norwegian polar explorers. As well as the local bus mentioned above you can also get a water taxi across the harbour from Aker Brygge, the waterfront in the city centre.

If you like architecture or social history, the Norsk Folkemuseum is fascinating. Lots of buildings from across Norway collected and reassembled (easy with timber frames!) in a park a few minutes' walk from Fram and Kon-tiki, and really well dressed to match their period. There's a stave church there too.

Sadly the Viking Ship Museum is closed for rebuilding and expansion, but for those finding this thread in 2027 the new look museum will probably be well worth a visit - the ships are stunning and astonishingly well preserved.

The Olympic ski jumping centre above the city is worth a visit to see how crazy you have to be to stand at the top in a pair of skis.

If you’ve only got one full day do a simple waterfront loop from the Oslo Opera House over to Aker Brygge, then jump on the ferry to Bygdoy and pick just one museum (the Fram Museum is a solid shout). It keeps it cheap, walkable, and you won’t feel like you spent the whole day rushing between stops.

I've been to Oslo a few years ago now and one thing i really enjoyed is getting the metro up to the Holmenkollen Ski jump.

I sat and watched the skiers for an hour or so enjoying a coffee and found it most enjoyable.

Also after seeing the size of the thing i found a great deal of respect for Eddie the Eagle because by christ it seems massive in real life compared to what you see on TV!
