I am looking to take my wife away for two nights in the lake district for her birthday. I have only ever been once many years ago so don't really know the place at all.

Does anyone have recommendations for great hotel? Ideally would like water front and/or mountain/valley setting, good restaurant and wine list is important. Not too fussed about cost just would like somewhere with the main ingredients!

Thank you.

I lived near Loweswater before moving here (Highlands). First thing to mention is that the north is much nicer and quieter than the busy south.

It's an Inn, not hotel, but I highly recommend:

V. Friendly and great beer.

We stayed here a few years ago. Coniston Inn It may not tick the wine list box but location was lovely and a bit more away from crowds

We love Lodore falls near Keswick so much so we actually got Married there a few years ago, it has since had a revamp and is even nicer.

We’ve stayed at both Low Wood Bay and also Langdale Hotel&Spa both are a good choice!

Can't help on a specific hotel but having been up there several times in the last decade for weddings be cautious on the larger scenic venues. Although paying premium rates you could feel like an uninvited wedding guest as they tend to take over.

We stayed at The Inn at Grasmere for a long weekend back in October near the centre and not overly expensive with some great walks nearby although it lashed down with rain most of the time would recommend the place and accommodation.

We ve just arrived at The Hillthwaite Hotel for a couple of nights, halfway down the hill between between Windermere and Bowness. We ve been coming for a few years and always get the VIP deals. Friendly staff, many been here as long as we ve been coming, comfortable rooms, excellent food and a small pool if you like a dip. Never had any issues.
..I should have added that we always eat at the hotel as part of the deals but in the past we’ve had excellent meals at Villa Positano and The Wild Boar. I organised a few car club weekends at The Burnside going back a few years, they were great times.

The Samling is good. On the hillside looking down over lake Windermere. If you really want to go for it then stay in Cartmell and go to L’Enclume, who also have rooms. At the southern end of the lakes but you can in the thick of it in half an hour.

Another vote for the Forest Side at Grasmere.

Michelin starred restaurant and an excellent wine list to match.

This would be a good option, and handy for Keswick if you fancy a spot of 'dog watching'.

...and just next to Whinlatter mountain biking if you're into that wink

The Inn on the Lake. Ullswater.

I've been there a few times for coffee and lunch but not actually stayed there.
I'd avoid Windermere area as it gets very busy but some nice hotels there.

Another option would The Cottage in the Wood. I think it has changed hands since we went for lunch but the new owners look to be keeping to the same standard as they've kept their Michelin Star for this year.

We always stay at Another Place https://another.place/ and love it. Will be back again soon.

Also love Cottage in the woods mentioned above, but have only eaten there for their tasting menu. Great place to spot red squirrels whilst you are having lunch!

Here's another option close to me, though it's not in the Lakes (around 45mins from Keswick):

https://farlamhall.com/

Rishi was at the Gilpin Lodge in the Lakes but has been here for a few years now.

One night here and a second night in the Lakes?

...we are off there Mrs Lotos special birthday in a couple of weeks
