Next week I need to travel from London to Pembroke, which is about 4.5hrs drive. I don't fancy going in there and back in one day.

Therefore, and as an Englishman, where would you recommend stopping on the way back? I was thinking of Bath, but thats still about 6-7hrs driving, so I'm looking for something in Wales.

When away, I like to have a wonder round the area and pop in somewhere for a pint and get a bit of work done.

Any ideas?

Will be doing similar next month and will stop either in Cardiff (Park Gate or Radisson Blu depending on cost) or anywhere around Swansea marina. It'll be part of a week long tour so I'll be being a bit tight when it comes to hotels so I have more available for food and drink along the way.

Whatever you do, drive Caerphilly.

In seriousness, lots of good pubs/places to stay in and around Chepstow.

Small place called Cardiff, or Browns in Laugharne if you like a steak.

I’d stay in Pembrokeshire (but I’m biased!) make the most of being here, out of season accommodation should be fairly cheap, Little Haven is a lovely little village with 3 pubs and decent food, or Tenby / Saundersfoot if you want a larger town, just bring your rain mac!

Yes, but Swindon is most of the way home again if you're going from London to Pembroke and back.

I'd probably also stay in Pembroke, but if you want to start heading back the same day then The Royal George in Tintern looks nice ( review ). I've just booked a weekend there for later in the spring. Tintern Abbey is nice, and there are some good walks in the area or the Forest of Dean if you have time.

Both Tenby / Saundersfoot are still largely closed sadly….
