Mrs BC are off on a driving holiday in California and Arizona next weekend. In Florida we bought a SunPass transponder and just load money onto it on the app. The transponders can be bought in drug stores.

Unfortunately the SunPass won’t work in California and Hertz are quoting $270 for a plate pass including all tolls for the 3 week rental. That seems excessive though inevitably we’ll be taking some toll roads & bridges.

Does anyone know of a SunPass equivalent for California?

Might be cheaper and easier just to pay the daily $10 admin fee (plus tolls) to Hertz for the few days you actually go on toll roads. We did this in Florida and it was far cheaper than buying a pass for our 20 days trip.

There are relatively few toll roads in California (some are just the Express Lanes on a normal road) and you can always avoid them by selecting 'No Tolls' on Google, or just ensure you only go on them for a couple of days when doing a long journey.

I don't know about Hertz, but the other companies cap their admin fee for the entire booking (ours had a cap of about $40 from memory).
