Pretty sure its not that. The paddle gear isn't Rochdale Canal gear, looks like Leeds and Liverpool Canal to me.Probably lock 17 oldroyd, a piece of canal I cycle
If you want, I can share the picture on the Canalworld forum which should get an identification.

Thanks; I doubt it's the Rochdale as it wasn't navigable in the 1960s. After a look on Google Maps the countryside in the photo looks more open too.
ETA looking just in front of the top gates there's a distinctive paddle mechanism I hadn't spotted before.

I got this from Picarta AI :
This image shows Bank Newton Locks on the Leeds and Liverpool Canal in North Yorkshire, England.
Specifically, the photo captures a view of the locks situated between Gargrave and Bank Newton. This stretch of the canal is well-known for its scenic setting within the Yorkshire Dales National Park.
Also this:

The image above is June 2023 - I'm not sure how much could change around a lock in that time?

That looks incredibly close and could well be it! Same paddle mechanism too.It looks like a winter shot, so maybe not a canal holiday but more likely that my parents were touring the area, saw the sign to the locks and went to investigate. My father loved the canals and photography and there's even a little turn-off where it's likely he parked. It's fascinating to retrieve bits of history like this
About 10 years later we hired a narrowboat and did it by water!

Not sure it is L&L - that looks like a narrow canal - Leeds Liverpool is a wide.
Paddles are the L&L type also double top and bottom gates which apart from a few exceptions (and this isn't one of them) means its a wide lock.Chapeau.
