Can you locate this place?

[Simpo Two]

This was taken by my father sometime in the 1960s. It looks a bit 'Yorkshire' but could perhaps be west country.

If anyone recognises it or the canal system that would be great

Pretty sure its not that. The paddle gear isn't Rochdale Canal gear, looks like Leeds and Liverpool Canal to me.

Thanks; I doubt it's the Rochdale as it wasn't navigable in the 1960s. After a look on Google Maps the countryside in the photo looks more open too.

Thanks. The L&L seems closer to the mark IMHO.

ETA looking just in front of the top gates there's a distinctive paddle mechanism I hadn't spotted before.

It does look like the stretch between Skipton and Gargrave.

It looks like a winter shot, so maybe not a canal holiday but more likely that my parents were touring the area, saw the sign to the locks and went to investigate. My father loved the canals and photography and there's even a little turn-off where it's likely he parked. It's fascinating to retrieve bits of history like this

About 10 years later we hired a narrowboat and did it by water!

Glad we got the wide/narrow thing sorted out. I'd hate to see anyone engaging in 'windlasses at dawn' over it

IIRC the L&L used 'short boats' so the proportion of the locks might look different from normal.
