We are going with our adult kids (for a week of sightseeing and walking around Porto in July this year. They are then flying home and my wife and I have a further week. On the basis that we don't want to take another flight, what should we do with the week?

I was thinking of a train to the south coast for sun and chill.
We are not package holiday people and have never done the all inclusive thing.
Boutique hotels in cities and renting villas for self catering is more our thing?

Any recommendations to location or activities?

We like Alvor, lovely beaches and cobbled streets with lots of bars and restaurants. Stopped there in the motorhome the last couple of years. Also we hired a car for a couple of days to visit other towns, quite cheap.

Maybe head up the Douro Valley and visit some Port houses, it's beautiful especially from the river. There's a picturesque railway that runs alongside the river and stops at the best places.

This. One of the most beautiful regions we've been to. We took our Camper and it was great. Maybe you could hire one??

Cascais is a really nice place to base yourselves and it’s close to Lisbon & Sintra for day trips. Much nicer than the Algarve because it’s less British IMO.

I’lla d’ arousa in Spain is a great spot for a bit of r&r in a self catering place, 2 hrs north of Porto, not at all commercial

Depends how far you want to go. I really like the Alentejo.

We had a good holiday a few years ago. We spent a few days in Porto and then stayed in the forest area south of Coimbra.
