I suspect there isn’t an answer….& I am almost certainly over-thinking this hehe

Our drive to the Alps last month was marred by a suspension breakage that caused something of a delay & meant we drove through the night instead of a relaxing two-night pootle down!

Holiday was *awesome* & the car behaved coming home, so all is good….& I feel we will get a new/newer car before next years jaunt!

It did get me thinking.
The AA did a decent job finding a garage who fixed things within 2 days (still cost a grand eek)…..

….but I wondered - is there any cover that would have got us an equivalent vehicle to get us to our destination AND get us back several weeks later?
Or identified a garage at a destination who could repair it, & getting us & the car there.

I feel the only real solution is a hire car, but that would cost a lot for a month-long ski trip as we had, to sit parked on the mountain for almost 4 weeks. Maybe one way car hire there & again back.

Like I say….overthinking based on one bad issue in 2 decades of doing this!

My Austin Healey had a failed big end 20 miles off the ferry in northern Spain.

The naughty Healey was taken away by a truck, we were dropped off at an airport to pick up a hire car, we took that car to Gibralter, then Geneva, then Le Havre where we left it.

That was AA 5 star Euro cover 15 years ago.

Come to think of it, we swapped the hire car exitibg Spain into France.

Yes- aa European breakdown cover. Or at least it did back in 2017. We broke down in Belgium. Car was left at a local garage, we were provided with a hire car to continue the trip to Croatia and back.

Interesting, thanks.
We have AA breakdown cover, but I m not convinced it will give us a loan car for a month. Maybe I need to read the small print .

I suspect one of the issues may be around "equivalent vehicle" if you have a fully loaded 7 seater and you want the same that's fair enough but if you are on a road trip in a classic 911 then it may become an issue, that being said many of the recovery services have many caveats in their policies, especially for European recovery

You’ll need European cover not just standard aa. I was given a Mercedes b class for 11 days to drive 2500 miles. Not the driving holiday in a lotus I was hoping for, but could have been worse

That's fair. We do have European cover....although with a boot full of ski kit, I imagine the best we could hope for would be a van!

Need to read the small print.

Most policies mention the maximum duration you're covered for in Europe. And my policies have something in them about paying for travel back to home destination and then back again in the event you have to leave the car and then come back for it.

Just a small caveat with regard to rental cars. I had 2 friends on separate trips holiday in France. One had a terminal engine failure in their Mokka, and another fuel pump/electrical failure in a Cashcow.

The Mokka was to be scrapped as it was 10+ years old, and the Cashcow was 2022 and was to be towed back to the UK at a later date. Both families got EV rental cars as these were the only cars available. Mokka family got a car with only 1/2 charge and with all the charging stops, both of them missed their tunnel crossings and had to pay extra.
