Hadn’t heard anything about this until I visited the vet yesterday to be told that residents of GB are no longer going to be able to use EU issued pet passports for travel from GB to EU.

Apparently the new rule comes in on April 22nd. I can see this coming as a surprise to EU pet passports holders and causing problems at ports.

How can border staff possibly check where an owner's main residence is?

Another fking stupid Brexit bonus!

With ease. If you’re claiming that you’re an EU resident then you’ll have the biometric residency card to prove it. No EU resident would travel without that, as it makes life at EU border controls very simple. Google ‘EU Residency Card” and there are hundreds of examples of them. They are a standard format across all EU countries, albeit with the language of the resident country on there.

Seems an infringement of the rights of those animals lucky enough to have an EU passport.

Is there anything in the system to link animals with their humans?

Might be a business opportunity for an EU passport holder to accompany people's animals across the border and hand them back in Calais.

I thing you are mistaken. GB residents have not been able to use EU pet passports since brexit. You now use Animal Health Certificates.

You could if you have a second home in the EU. My hound is a French national and registered with a vet in France. smile

Or get a Spanish vet in an area popular with Brits to issue a Spanish pet passport without a local address, or as one of my neighbours did, specifically buy a dog in Ireland so it came with EU paperwork.

We rescued a dog from Southern Ireland around 7 years ago and he came with an EU passport.
Does that mean he’s OK if we ever fancied taking him to France or has that now gone following Brexit?

If he is resident in the UK, our outside the EU, the EU passport can no longer be used to get into the EU. It seems it's still OK to come back though. rolleyes

We travel tomorrow and found out about this yesterday. They categorically cannot travel on an EU issued pet passport from tomorrow (22nd April).

Fortunately our vet can fit us in. PITA. Just waiting for confirmation that his rabies jab in Spain that expires whilst we are away (by design as he used to have to have it there to keep his passport valid) can be boosted today without any bullst...

Not been massively publicised, but then I guess it's a relatively niche problem.

Per .gov.uk

With this and the silly fingerprint thing, Folkestone is going to be a nightmare tomorrow...

Is that saying that the certificate has to be issued a maximum of 10 days before you plan to travel or am I reading it wrong?

Correct.

If you get one today and travel in 11 days time, you will need a new one. They then cover travel up to four months in duration, but if you return to the UK at all in that four months they are then used up and a new one will be required to leave the UK, even within that four months.

That's been the case for a while. It's the fact anyone with a property (or a friendly vet) overseas will have an EU Pet Passport that they have used for years that all of a sudden is not allowed as of tomorrow.

Our vet did us a solid and we are good to go, but decided to stay down there and get across very early to avoid the chaos that will presumably ensue as the day goes on!

It was announced last year that pet passports were coming back but since then nothing seems to have happened.

Typical political incompetence. Announce a welcome change then do nothing to actually make it happen!

Even with the EU pet passport, there was a timing issue with getting vaccinations when returning to the UK.

Slightly conflicting reports from French news site. Suggests if the animal is registered with French registration system, the still OK. Hmmm, maybe will try taking hound's French ID card to test.

I sincerely hope nobody voted to remain in the EU just so they could take a pet on holiday. But I expect many did.
