Fly + Rent Sports Car

Where can you fly to, in Europe, where you'll find good fun "spirited driving" roads, and rent something fun (at a reasonable ish rate)?
The example is "fly to Inverness, rent a Caterham, drive the NC500" and ideally looking for something similar in Portugal, Spain, Italy, France, Austria, or Germany.
Any suggestions?

I went to Northern Italy, hired an MX5 for a one way trip and drove to Rome, then flew back from there. Some fantastic roads through the spine of Italy and along the coast - and the MX5 was nimble and quick enough to be lots of fun without being too expensive or risking lots of chats with the carabinieri.

Budget I think were the only ones willing to give you a manual. We got to the counter and got an auto, diesel Mercedes CLK, which is not really very sporty at all. Top down slushbox motoring + tractor rattle = not cool. I pleaded at the counter for anything else but they said they never get manual or petrol convertibles so watch out for any "or similar" clauses you see!

We flew into Venice and spent a few days there, then collected the car and drove across the top end of Italy via Florence to Pisa, then along the West coast down to Rome, gave the car back then spent a few days in Rome before flying back from there.

I had another thought - BMW Welt in Munich will rent you an M car or a Z4 for a reasonable rate with a pre-loaded route including interesting roads. The mountains are only an hour away! I've not done it myself though.

I was speaking to one of the hire desks at Inverness a couple of weeks ago and they’ve gotten rid of all their interesting cars specifically because of people doing this apparently.The example is "fly to Inverness, rent a Caterham, drive the NC500" and ideally looking for something similar in Portugal, Spain, Italy, France, Austria, or Germany.

Most of the major hire companies here used to do a decent fleet of interesting cars but they don't appear to now.
Always found it useful for properly testing a model that I was thinking about buying.
20 odd years ago I rented a Boxster and then a Z4, both for a week, in order to decide what to buy (I bought a 987).
Over the past few years I have been interested in an Alpine A110, an Abarth 695, a V6 Emira and a MX5.
Can't rent one anywhere (in the UK) There was an Emira on Turo, close to me, but it was £600 a day and that didn't include full insurance cover, and besides I've never used Turo and I can't believe that private individuals actually rent their pride and joys out to the common unwashed
Shame the big companies don't do this anymore but I guess that they worked out that it wasn't viable.
