European road trip - France Croatia leg

Hi all,

Doing a road trip with kids this year and the middle section will be c.2-3 nights from south eastern France across Italy, Slovenia and into Croatia around Rijeka.

Need recommendations for over night stays in that route - at least 2 nights possibly 3 on the way. Last year we came across a massive gulf in quality in the usual side of the motorway Ibis etc. One was phenomenal for the price and one was dire! Novotel was OK. These all in France though. Online reviews only get you so far these days…

Anyone got real world experience of decent places along that route? Ideally near the autoroute. C.£200 a night or less ideally.

Get away from the autoroute, make each night interesting, saltzburg is a lovely place as is lake bled.

Ideally we would, but we have 2 stints staying with family during the trip so the time to get between them isn t long. Hence wanting to be quite close to the motorways, but I hear you. Maybe even a small detour can reap benefits. Incidentally we have friends in Bled so staying with them 2 nights. It s more the France to Croatian border (Bled on way back before Germany).

Salzburg a good shout.
