I suspect they don't want rid of tourists, they just want a cap on numbers, curbs on loss of housing, water profligacy, pollution etc.
The thing is with Spain there's already a system in place to cap the numbers - you need a tourist licence in order to rent out a property to tourists. The issue is that it's not very well enforced, if they clamped down on it HARD for a season, checking every AirBnB listing has a valid licence, etc. they'd solve the issue practically overnight.Apart from the (police) violence I applaud the Palmesano and others.
It's their island and they're being ignored and left behind. They are making themselves heard as their Gov isn't listening and their concerns are real. Housing costs are completely unsustainable, water is being wasted on an industrial scale by hotels and golf courses, local infrastructure is creaking and then there's the drunken antisocial behaviour.
Maybe if the demonstrations raise awareness of the issues faced by the locals to the likes of Nic-nfr74's wife and her girls then Palmesano are achieving something....
N.B - I'm sure Nic-nfr74's wife and her girls aren't solely responsible for the unrest.

Locals protesting uncontrolled influx of foreigners negatively impacting their quality of life. Outrageous concept, surely racist? It's their island and they're being ignored and left behind.
