I might be able to guess the answer to this but am curious…

When flying out of some countries an official in a passport booth checks your passport;

In some countries you scan your passport page yourself at the exit barrier before security;

I flew out of the US a couple of months ago and there were no passport checks at all, but a facial scanner at the boarding gate (boarding pass wasn’t even scanned);

I flew in to Gatwick yesterday for a few hours. On departure there was none of the above?! Checked in online, scanned my boarding pass and went through security. No overt passport checks at all? (Other than the airline staff at the boarding gate who check to see that ID and boarding pass match).

So why don’t the UK Border Authorities (need to) do any more passport checks on departure?

There haven’t been departure checks for over thirty years, information is collected by the airlines, ferries etc.
