Passport renewal delays
Discussion
Looking for some advice. I applied to renew my sons passport and we were not due to travel for another month, so I went with standard renewal as I read a lot online about the passport office turning around renewals in around one week to ten days.
HM Passport Office have admitted they lost my son's birth certificate after it was sent with his old passport in the same envelope. They received the passport but cannot locate the birth certificate. What frustrates me is they identified the birth certificate as missing on 7th October but didn't ask me for the Royal Mail tracking reference until 12th October. Once provided, they quickly confirmed they had received it and it was lost.
They have now ordered a replacement birth certificate, but our family holiday was going to be this afternoon so we are at a financial loss and nothing can be done to change.
I'm also concerned that my son's original birth certificate remains missing, which is causing obvious stress due to the personal information it contains and the potential risk of identity fraud.
HM Passport Office have mentioned recompense. Has anyone been in a similar situation? What compensation did you receive, and is it realistic to expect them to cover holiday costs where the delay has resulted from their error?
Any advice would be appreciated. Thanks.

The loss of the birth certificate is annoying but you've got no chance of getting any compensation for holiday costs, it isn't their fault you applied so late.HM Passport Office have admitted they lost my son's birth certificate after it was sent with his old passport in the same envelope. Their website says the average time is within 3 weeks, where did you read 7-10 days?

I understand their standard turnaround was 3 weeks and I applied with just under four weeks to our holiday. I read online forums and heard of the quicker recent turnaround so was confident they would return new passport before we go away. I did not anticipate them losing my documents and taking so long to confirm this was the case.Their website says the average time is within 3 weeks, where did you read 7-10 days?
