The cost of a train ticket from Preston to Bolton next Wednesday after 8am is £7.50 for the 8.12 or the 8.23am.
The cost of a train ticket from Preston to Manchester on the same train on the same day is only £5 and guess what? The train stops at Bolton.

It's well known that you can save money by buying a few seperate tickets for one complete journey instead of buying just one complete ticket but surely this £7.50 price for a less than £5 journey is a rip off, it's not as though the £5 ticket is off peak

I also love it when I get told to buy a return.

As it is cheaper than buying a single?!!! How the hell do they work those sums out.

I am sat here waiting for son to get off the 1853 from Edinburgh. It is now 2007hrs and it has only just left Newcastle, so wil be in at about 2130. Just the 150 minutes late.

Obviously the cheap fare is on the train that doesn't arrive.

Preston to Mallaig on 8/04/09 one way with 3 tickets is £35. Buy 1 complete ticket and travel on the same 3 trains for a mere £82 one way.

I guess that would be the impeccable service of National Express by the sounds of it. Bring back GNER I say. The only times I get trains usually is to the airports. You could set your watch by GNER, not the current shower of st.

I think that's the most worrying thing! Somebody, somewhere, has actually sat down and worked out an algorithm for this.

Europe rail prices are per km. You travel 19km, you pay 19 * .37 cents (or whatever).

Shirley that's a much easier way of working out pricing? I'm sure somebody somewhere knows the distances from station to station etc.

The one that annoys me is the ticket for my commute.

They have set the prices so that whatever combinations of tickets you buy, it costs a few pence more than an all zones travel card.

How can committing to a route cost more than a ticket which lets you go anywhere you want?

What is the solution though?

I went to London today, on the train. Two available tickets: off-peak return, for £50, or an 'open' return for £60.

I don't want to use off-peak, as I can't travel between 15:00 and 18:30, and I don't know what time I'll be finished. So, £60 open return sounds good. I pay my money, ask a couple of questions.......and I then found out the last train leaves London at 15.10

What the fvck use is an 'open' return that stops running mid afternoon??????????????????????????????? rageragerage

Interestingly I was working down in London last month and used an Open return at 9.30pm on a Sunday night.

I actually travelled Leeds-->London return twice during my time working in the Smoke. Both tickets had identical rules and were so far as I could tell when I looked in detail (yes, there were huge delays wink) were exactly the same except for the £5 difference in price! Same route, same time, same ticket type bought at the same moment. God Knows!

You can travel from Manchester to Gatwick early on a Saturday morning for £10.50(one way nearly 4 hours) Leave it a few hours later and it's £72.

It costs £15 to go from London Euston to Gatwick at the same time, and the journey takes 1 hour.

Are they havin a laff?
