The cost of a train ticket from Preston to Bolton next Wednesday after 8am is £7.50 for the 8.12 or the 8.23am.
The cost of a train ticket from Preston to Manchester on the same train on the same day is only £5 and guess what? The train stops at Bolton.
It's well known that you can save money by buying a few seperate tickets for one complete journey instead of buying just one complete ticket but surely this £7.50 price for a less than £5 journey is a rip off, it's not as though the £5 ticket is off peak

I guess that would be the impeccable service of National Express by the sounds of it. Bring back GNER I say. The only times I get trains usually is to the airports. You could set your watch by GNER, not the current shower of sObviously the cheap fare is on the train that doesn't arrive.

Europe rail prices are per km. You travel 19km, you pay 19 * .37 cents (or whatever).
Shirley that's a much easier way of working out pricing? I'm sure somebody somewhere knows the distances from station to station etc.
The one that annoys me is the ticket for my commute.
They have set the prices so that whatever combinations of tickets you buy, it costs a few pence more than an all zones travel card.
How can committing to a route cost more than a ticket which lets you go anywhere you want?
What is the solution though?

I went to London today, on the train. Two available tickets: off-peak return, for £50, or an 'open' return for £60.The cost of a train ticket from Preston to Manchester on the same train on the same day is only £5 and guess what? The train stops at Bolton.

I don't want to use off-peak, as I can't travel between 15:00 and 18:30, and I don't know what time I'll be finished. So, £60 open return sounds good. I pay my money, ask a couple of questions.......and I then found out the last train leaves London at 15.10
What the fvck use is an 'open' return that stops running mid afternoon???????????????????????????????
Interestingly I was working down in London last month and used an Open return at 9.30pm on a Sunday night.
I actually travelled Leeds-->London return twice during my time working in the Smoke. Both tickets had identical rules and were so far as I could tell when I looked in detail (yes, there were huge delays
) were exactly the same except for the £5 difference in price! Same route, same time, same ticket type bought at the same moment. God Knows!

It costs £15 to go from London Euston to Gatwick at the same time, and the journey takes 1 hour.
