For those of us who already travel a lot and burn our airmile points, there is already a known workaround.

Simply buy a cheap ticket to places like Dublin/Copenhagen/Milan and start from there instead. There are some downsides (ie can't check baggage through + separate tickets mean you are not covered for delays), but the savings can be massive - especially on business/first redemptions.
