A pizzeria where the locals eat: Da Baffetto

Don't go around buying bottles of water - do drink/fill up from the public water fountains (everywhere)

The city centre is small and compact - walk to most places.

Places like Piazza Navona are extremely expensive - find side street bars.

Do go to look at the Pantheon, very cool to thibnk it was built nearly 2,000 years ago and until the 1950's was the largest self supporting concrete dome.

Then head off for ice cream, I can thoroughly recommend De La Palmas, a few mnutes walk from the Pantheon. Start at the Pantheon, stand with your back to the main door and look up the piazza. You will see McDonalds at the top right of the square and to the right of this is a road going up at 1 o'clock (assuming looking straight up the square from the pantheon is 12). Walk up here for about 5 mins, you will pass one ice cream place on your right quite quickly and I think you cross over 2 streets before seeing De la Palma's on your left. You decide what you want (number of scoops/ cone type) and pay first, they give you a ticket that you take that back to the actual ice cream counter and then hand over the slip and make your order. It's wonderful

Sistene Chapel is very cool but I prefer to go right up on top of the Dome of St Peters. getting up htere you have to climb up between the outer and inner skin. It's only shoulder width at best but the view from the top is great.

Well worth a walk around the Forum, there are even some free guided tours.

Lots of local restaurants, esp in the Trastevere area. Back the other suggestion on the thread of not eating at one of the famous squares as you'll often get ripped off for mediocre food. Restaurants in the non-touristy local areas will be so much better value.

Walk about lots, the centre of Rome is really quite compact. Via Condotti near the Spanish Steps (Spagna subway station) is the high end designer shopping. Potentially some good bargains to be had. if it's of use there is a big La Perla there with s super range of choice. Also a great menswear shop on the corner last time I was there with lovely shirts.

Night time is very nice there, just don't go to the main railway station, esp round the back as that area is definietly not safe for tourists at night, otherwise I found it to be a very friendly safe city.

+1 on the very top of St. Peters... and don't catch the lift.

Buy a 24 or 48 hour ticket on one of the open top tour buses.
It does a circular route and you can jump on and off as much as you like
so you can stop when you see something you fancy visiting in detail.
