Anybody done this?

I can't seem to do it through any of the major rental websites and Expedia doesn't seem to offer a flight/car package to Narita.

Any pointers most welcome.

Sorry but why would you want to hire a car..? Its one of the most congested cities in the world.. The public transport system is fast, and easy to navigate.. albeit crowded. Taxi's are everywhere and are not too expensive...

Unless you are Out and about of the city. Narita to Tokyo Centre is only 25 minutes by train.

www.europcar.com have cars at Narita

As said before - public transport is OK - well in fact, better than OK in Japan.

Narita express gets you to central Tokyo PDQ and then subway or JR (normal train) is perfect for navigating Tokyo itself.
Watch out for the "ladies only" carriages in the evenings and queueing system on the platforms - and DON'T stand in the wrong place or push onto the platform when "your" train arrives - there will be another along in 3 minutes!!

And you don't want to try and find an address that isn't a hotel either - apparently not many Japanese find it that easy either......

Have fun though - it's a fantastic country smile

I've never found the traffic too bad, myself. They sorted alot of the problems out a few years ago, but as others have said, if you are only in Tokyo, don't bother.

The taxis are fantastic (never ever touch the door handle!) and the trains prompt.

If you catch the JR instead of the Narita Express, go first class if in rush hour. They really do have white gloved people crushing you in!

Enjoy...

Don't be scared of driving in Tokyo, in fact it a much better way of getting around as you get to see a lot of 'normal' Tokyo that you miss if you take the train. Much more interesting also is the car culture at night, particularly on the rest stops on the shuto expressway and the rest stop on the Yokohama side of the rainbow bridge, you cant get to these areas without your own car.

It depends what you want really, but one thing to keep in mind is that you will need to have somewhere to park it, as parking is at a massive premium in Tokyo. I lived in Shibuya and the car spot I had cost nearly as much to rent as my actual apartment!

In regards to renting, Id get into Tokyo and then look for something central, there is an Avis near Shinjuku station which will probably be your best bet. Also the GPS systems will be in japanese only, so it might be worth taking your own from here and buying the japan map.

I'm not planning on spending time in Tokyo. Instead I need a car to drive across to the Japanese Alps on the west coast.

Thanks for the tips.

Japan car rental is mostly done via the manufacturers; so Nissan Rental and Toyota Rental are the biggest outlets. Unless you speak Japanese you should book via the ToCoo aggregator, on http://www.tocoo.jp/english

The airport hire facility will have English speaking staff. Get them to program in your main destination on the GPS, and show you how to select Home to get back to Narita.

You will also need an International Drivers Permit.
