Okay I have decided I'm off, outta here for 6 months or so to do some backpacking/ travelling.

Looking at starting in Bangkok and going from there (not 100% thought out the route yet) and eventually ending up back in Bangkok. Maybe down the east side of Thailand, into Malaysia and then up the West side again.

Any way back on topic..... I have tried and searched for a few days now but are "open-ended" tickets still available or is it no a case of booking a flight around the 'sort of date i want to come back' and re-arranging the return flight when i am out there. Anybody have an idea of cost of oopen ended tickets Vs. a normal ticket with the change of flight dates charge incurred?

Really excited about this, going to chuck in the job, sell up everything and disappear for a while biggrin

Cheers guys.

I recently looked at an open ticket to South Africa. It turned out to be the same price as two singles. Easier to buy a single and get the return trip when needed.

Be aware that some countries won't like the fact you have only organised the inward flight.

You want to chat to v15ben about this.

He seems very knowledgable and works in that sector. smile

By the way, great thing to do. Thailand is an amazing place to explore. Just make sure you don't get stuck with all the other plebby "travellers" who never venture out of BKK.

Yeah I really fancy getting off the beaten track.

But one touristy thing that I REALLY want to do is the full moon party in Ko Phangan

You could certainly get a flight to Bangkok return and although you can't technically do an open-dated ticket, you can specify an approx return date for the ticket and change it for as little as £35. It works out much cheaper usually to do this rather than trying to find an open-dated option as there aren't very many companies who do these.

When are you looking to travel? I'll get you some price quotes and guarantee to beat any quote for the same flights you've found!

I am very jealous of that trip idea too! You can definitely still get off the beaten track but I'd be looking to Laos, Cambodia and possibly even Myanmar to get away from the tourist trail. It is possible though!

Full Moon Party is quality and you'll find various smaller beach parties on Ko Tao and Phang An pretty much any weekend! Book your accommodation well in advance for the Full Moon though unless you want to me on the other side of the island / in a gutter smile

You legend!

Basically looking at flying out no later than 1st November, but after 10th October (its my Mrs. sisters wedding)

And I "think" I would look at coming back February or March sort of time...... but who knows! lol

Vietnam and Cambodia are definately on the cards and as said I really need to sit down with a map and see where I fancy going but I don't really want to plan anything in concrete if you understand.

Basically where the wind takes me..... so to speak

I visited Vietnam, Cambodia, Thailand, Malaysia and Singapore plus China over about 3-4 months last year and you could easily live on that sort of cash.

Food is stupidly cheap provided you go for the local places and keep away from the Italian and British themed places aimed at tourists and you'll be fine. If your staying in dorms, the best way in my experience, then you'll easily find a good place for between $5-8 US Dollars depending on whether it's a big city or small town with less choices. As an example I paid $4 for a private twin room with air con, en suite, free internet and free breakfast in Hue so it's definitely possible. Just rememeber to bargain hard smile

I'll have a look on the flights for you and drop you an email with some prices and details.

As for the route, any questions you've got or any inspiration you need, there are plenty of people on this forum who've spent loads of time in the region and there is plenty to see! smile

Thailand immigration are fine with one-way tickets. I have several friends living out there and they all buy one-way tickets from LHR to BKK.

When I go I stay in a lovely serviced apartment in the city of Chonburi (1hr ish, traffic pending wink ) from BKK.

I eat from street vendors always and buy fruit from the market to snack on during the day.
I usually stay for 4 weeks and never spend more than a grand out there.

No worries. We've always got cheap BKK flights around the place and usually some crazy offer if you're flexible with dates smile

Just had a look at those flights for you mate:

Based on leaving midweek in October and returning midweek early March:

Open to all passengers fare - £399 inc taxes return
Student/under 26 discount fare - £388 inc taxes return

I'm going to go myself at that price roflthumbup

Seems quite good I'd agree. BKK is a good hub around that whole area - it's worth flying in and out of even if you are visiting Vietnam, Cambodia, Laos etc. Get your main flights sorted, then look at AirAsia for short hops around that area - usually a few tens of quid from say Hanoi to BKK, and will save a couple of days on a nasty bus or overnight train.

Try and have a rough plan before you go and do some research - you'll likely be spending at least one, but maybe two or three days a week when you are out there on admin - sorting tickets, visas, planning where you are going etc, so anything you can do before you go will help, even if it's just a clutch of timetables printed in england rather than at a 15mins for a page to load internet cafe.

I loved Vietnam and was blown away by Cambodia. Everyone I know who's been says Laos is beats thoses two hands down (though I've yet to visit). Friendlier than Vietnam, yet very laid back.
