We're planning a week in Croatia in september... And looking for recommendations on which bit to go to...

So far it's between the northern coastal riviera near italy (forget what it's called) or the islands and coast around Split.....

The islands off the town of Split, known as Brac and Havr are excellent but expensive. The island of Hvar is regulary named as the most beutiful in Europe.

thanks for the comments..

are the islands of Brac and Hvar something you could visist for a day-trip from the mainland, or is it best to stay on them? is there enough there in the way of restaurents/bars/other stuff to do etc?

Thanks again...

Another vote for Split and Hvar, the ferry runs several times a day and is pretty cheap. Also take a look at Korcula.

Both Bac and Hvar can be easily reached by ferry from the town of Split. Both are tourist islands and full of bars etc, some decent diving can be had also. Can't recommend Hvar highly enoungh though.

It's not my favourite location either,
where would you recommend then?

I stayed in Pula a few years ago, was very nice and had an old amphitheatre (we went during the local film festival and watched a few local films in there which was a fantastic experience). Rovinj is also a very picturesque place with a nice looking marina. Would recommend a costal drive as some of the views are epic. However, be careful if you are swimming in the sea... I managed to get a fantastic jellyfish bite on my elbow (you could see exactly where the tentacles hit)

Further north, check out the Slovenian coastal towns of Opatija and Portoroz / Piran. Hidden gems.
