I'm looking to take my gf away at the end of the year, December time and want to spend a few days somewhere in England.

I'm paying so it musn't be too pricey laugh

Are there are any places/hotels you would really recommend? Preferably in the North of England as I don't want to spend the majority of the holiday driving to and from the place.

North of England. December.

I reckon the best place to stay would be at home.

I was at a wedding in Masham in March, and it's a nice wee town. Home of Theakstons and Black Sheep in case you get thirsty too.
Stayed here, which seemed reasonably enough priced to me.

Have a look at the De Vere website.

They always have some decent deals.

I'm looking at booking something at their Southampton hotel at the end of the month.

Wouldn't recommend De Vere Grand Harbour in Southampton. Stayed last Sat for 1 night (£189 B&B Deluxe).
Room had seaview, watched some massive Container ships pass by.
However, room had no aircon and the whole hotel is looking very tired - pool has broken tiles, rusty staircase etc.
Only ate in the bar, but club sandwich etc nothing special.
Quite a few of the reviews on Tripadvisor agree.
Also - it's no longer a 5*, it's only 4* now.

Don't mean to slag off De Vere in general, we stayed at the Cameron House in Loch Lomond in July and that was fantastic.

Better value for Southampton is the newish Novotel which is about 500yards aways (still by docks) and also has an indoor pool.

yes Assuming you're not going over Christmas or New Year there should be some good hotel deals available in December in the Lakes.

Good call, that - I was almost taken in by the photos of the Grand Harbour, then started reading the reviews.

Shame, really, as it could be a very impressive place if they refurbished it - and I really wanted to go there for the views over the Solent.

The De Vere at the Reebok Stadium in Bolton is rather impressive, and De Vere Carden Park in Cheshire(ish) is very nice, too.

Just spent a week at Dunsley Hall just outside Whitby. Lovely hotel in a lovely part of the countryside but might be more than you're looking to pay.

This had a good (if brief) review in a recent EVO article:
