I've got the opportunity to go to Hong Kong in October - 10 days or so in Hong Kong and then perhaps a week or two to explore China.

Does anyone have any recomendations? I quite fancy doing some of the hiking trails in Hong Kong but not sure whether its a good idea as travelling on my own (unless I can find a tour). Does anyone know what camping is like in HK generally (first 10 days in Cosmopolitan Hotel - but still fancy waking up in a tent on a beach at some point).

If I'm going over to China where do people recommend? Looking at relatively budget options if possible - but open to suggestions.

Cheers

Depends on what sort of thing you fancy, we did a tour a few years back;

Beijing: Lots of history - Forbidden City definitely worth seeing, also possibly one of the best bases to see the Great Wall - but for gods sake don't go to Baddaling (sp?) - we went further for a much quieter and interesting bit of the wall.

Xian: the Tera Cotta Army - very impressive, although to be honest we didn't like Xian so much, but that could have been due to weather and a rubbish guide there!

Yangtse cruise (3 gorges + dam) very good, but perhaps not a budget option!

Shanghai - very similar to Hong Kong, really liked it, mix of very modern and history

Guilin - the 'caste' mountains and cormorant fishing, very tranquill river and totally different to t'other places.

we ended up in HK and enjoyed that too: I had actually been there years ago before hand-over and to be honest didn't seemed very different, except swanky new airport minus mountain dodging approach! lol In HK there are obvious things to do, like furnicular up to the peak, Stanley etc. Your hiking options; New Territories are interesting (I got out there the 1st time I was there) but can't comment on what you can do as I was actually working so not walking!

Happy to expand on the above if there is something you want more info on.
