Any ideas for best place for snow given time of year - don't want to travel to US or Canada so needs to be Europe, usually ski 3 Valleys but fancy a change.

Speak to 'Marcellus' on here, he has contacts in Les Carroz and may be able to help get what you're looking for. smile

I would hang on and book after you have read the snow reports or go somewhere with a glacier.

Austria seems to get the early season snow if the past 5 years are anything to go by. I would though wait for a snow report before opting to book.

It's a tricky one - I want to get it booked as it's much cheaper at the mo, but obviously don't want to get caught on a mountain with no snow!

ooooooo the "where will there be snow this christmas" debate?

scratchchin

Almost anyone will be able to show you a graph showing how good their snow is at Christmas(I can and we're only at 1100m) but in all honesty everywhere has actually been good for snow at Christmas recently.

This is coupled with that most resorts now have very good snow making facilities and will protect their resort for Christmas week.

Yes Glacier resorts will have a glacier, yet how many times people who "must go glacier" actually "go glacier" is open to debate.

So back to the question in hand; Skiing at Christmas; pick a resort that suits you..... do you have children?

OK if you have to book now I would as suggested look at Austria, St Anton/St Christoph (less expensive neighbour) or Kaprun/Zell as they have significant height which is unusual in the Austrian alps, even if you dont have lots of natural snow they should have a good base coat down for the 3rd week of the season.

Of course lots depends on your group as well as these resorts may not suit what you want.

I would think about Val Thorens and Espace Killy - both have been good for Christmas/New year snow in the last few years

and that's the issue I don't think that there's a resort in EUrope that hasn't had good snow over the Christmas/New Year holidays that hasn't had good snow over the last few years!!

Christmas 07? was poor no snow at low resorts, icy hard pack at higher resorts - at least if you book somewhere with a glacier you are almost guaranteed to be able to ski.

Les Carroz you say?

We've had a place there since 1986. I've been skiing there since I was 3.

Fantastic place - you get the skiing of Flaine without the hideousness of actually having to stay there.
Les Carroz I say..... lived here since September 2008........
