We are going over to Phily for a wedding next year and will be staying with family for a week or so.

We've decided to hire a car so that we can get about, see family, explore the restaurants and visit the outlet villages without being an inconvenience on the people that we are staying with who will be too busy sorting the big day out to be entertaining us like they usually would.

So, any recommendations for things to see and do? I don't mind traveling but would rather avoid big cities like Boston or Washington.

We've done NY a good few times now, but may well drive to a train station in NJ and jump on the train to Central for a day out.

We've also done Atlantic City and as we aren't gamblers can cross that off the list as done.

Any ideas?

To be honest not a lot - I've been struggling to find decent things to do in the area. I would initially suggest DC - but you've already ruled that out...great city if you haven't been.

Apart from that perhaps down the Jersey shore - maybe down to Cape May - nice area, picturesque and peaceful, but not a huge amount to do.

Also depends on time of year - could go down to the beaches in virginia/carolinas, but will be getting past that weather-wise soon.

Is this a NJ Dogging Spot where all the bored wives go for action then?

Look into 6 flags as it is the Alton Towers on NJ. Don't bother with major cities in NJ but may be worth look into going to Princeton for a day trip. If it is the summer then the beeches on the shore are well worth seeing just try and avoid the areas with too many drunks on the weekend as the Shore is NJ's version of the Hamptons.

If you want to get away for some time you can look into Vermont for hills or even Mt Tremblont in Canada for skiing or biking.

Again it depends on time of year as the temperature could be 110 degress or 10 degrees.

It'll be the start of June, so quite warm.

I've been to Princeton before but it was literally a fleeting visit one evening to gorge myself on Hooters chicken wings.

I think the plans are:

1 day in Phily

1 day cruising down to the coast and doing a run from Cape Cod to Perth Amboy, maybe taking in a few hours on a beach?

1 day driving to Atlanic City and doing it properly, rather than a brief walk through a casino and down the boardwalk.

1 day driving to Brunswick and catching the train to Central, and having a day in NY, maybe doing a few things that we haven't done in NY before like a cruise/dinner on the water.

1 day out to Flemington to visit the outlet village I love, maxing the credit card out then on to Allandale to visit family.

And maybe a trip to Springfield just so that I can get a picture of me under the sign!!

Any other ideas welcomed. Also if anyone can recommend any must visit restaurants then please do!
