recommend me a citybreak in Northern England

Hi all, the other half and I are looking for a 2 night weekend city break next month, and fancy going south of hadrian's wall and mingling with some of you fine Northern-Englanders.

We want to go somewhere with a good choice of bars and restaurants, preferably some interesting touristy things to do and somewhere thats quite nice to get around on foot.

I'm thinking Newcastle, Liverpool or Manchester as they're all within acceptable driving distance, and as I've not been to any of the aforementioned - any suggestions of where to go, where to stay or what to do are warmly welcomed.

Thanks guys, both Harrogate and York look like possibilities, from wikipedia Harrogate is among the top ten towns in the UK for residents drinking alcohol to hazardous levels, so as a Scotsman this may be the place for me
