Hello.

Mrs BenjC fancies a trip down to the Jurassic Coast for 4/5 nights in November.

Immediately I said yes. It turns out that unfortunately my idea of what the Jurassic Coast is does not bear much resemblance to reality. I thought it was something like this:

Apparently I should be thinking more along the lines of big beaches, long walks (in the rain) and lots of pubs with fires and real ale (If i get my way).

So I am opening this to the PH Massive - does any one know of a location within Dorset that will have decent B&Bs, nice countryside and a pub to walk ratio of 1 per mile? Oh and if I am being really cheeky and not pushing my luck too much I would love a seafood bar or two with in walking distance home.

Please help a PHer desperate not to waste his last 4 days of holiday this year sitting in a tea shop, wistfully looking out of a window thinking of Banus.

Many thanks

Benjc

My Mother-in-Law lives in West Bay and I love going down to visit.

What is on offer:

Palmers Brewery, mackerel fishing, fresh seafood (crabs, fish, Lyme Bay scallops etc). great walks up and over the Golden Cap (pub with fire at the bottom in Seatown). Briport is a lively-ish market town wiuth some nice pubs, and because you're in River Cottage land, a decent foodie culture is very noticeable - with a lot of pubs listign all teh local suppliers on their menus. The beach from West bay to Portland is the famed Chesil Beach and is a very pleasant place to be any time of the year. Inland is the Marshwood Vale, where I have a fanstasy of buying a smallholding and retiring to some day.

I'd also recommend going to Hix's restaurant in Lyme Regis. Bit pricey though, but represents the best of British.

The Tiger's your Father-in-Law's? I always pop in on a Saturday afternoon to catch up on the rugby and partake in a few pints of Otter or St Austells. Please forward on my compliments!

Thanks for the advice all!

There are some good pointers there!

So, we have found a few cottages for 2 that we can rent for a shortish break that are pretty good value. One in Beaminster, one in Lyme Regis and one in Bridport.

Out of those three where would you stay? (bearing in mind that unfortunately my wife's parents do not own a pub in any of them!)

Depending on the property and actual location, I'd personally choose Bridport
first, then Lyme, then Beminster.

Bridport is very well positioned, adn easy to get in an out of by foot and car. It's a mile inland from West Bay and the beach, and has quite a few facilities (supermarkets, pubs etc). It can be a bit "towny" in parts, but the Saturday Market is great, beer is local and very drinkable, and the surrounding scenery is, well, scenic.

Lyme is very pretty, and has good tourist facilities, but hell to get in and out by car and park when busy during summer and weekends. If the property is even slightly out of the town you will have a big steep walk up the hill to get to it. You have a nice seafront, beach great little harbour and pubs on the Cobb (and Mark Hix's place), and you can walk round to the muddy cliffs to search for fossils.

Beaminster is quite a few miles inland, nice enough but not much there for tourists unless you want a "get away from it all" country type break in a seculded house with a fire and a pub down the road.

Walk up to the top of Golden Cap - that should give you a bit of an appetite as it is a steep bugger. Check out the rather splendid NT cottage at the bottom too.
