I want to travel America for 6 months next year and wondered if i would need some kind of visa to do this

I'd ask the US embassy rather than a motoring forum, unless you wanted a short trip. They have a website.

Yes you will - you can only stay for 90 days on the visa waiver program.

For 6 months you need a B-2 visa.
It can be a multi entry via, but be aware that any single entry is for a MAXIMUM of 6 months ...

Visa waiver (ie visa free) is 90 days maximum.

You cannot work on either of these btw.
