I'm getting married next September and we'd love to go to the Indian Ocean on honeymoon (he doesn't want to go later in the year). I've read mixed information about the weather there around September. Has anyone actually been there then and what's it like?

I've recently come back (1st - 15th Sept.) from a fortnight in Sri Lanka and the Maldives (Kuredu). The weather was a bit mixed. It was quite overcast in Sri Lanka but still 30 degrees. The weather in the Maldives was tropical, most days it was all clear skies and searing heat. Some days it rained non-stop.

I'd definitely recommend it though.

We had 2 days of rain on our September honeymooon in the Maldives, nice warm refreshing rain the rest of the time it was jolly hot. Downside to the rain was though the bitting bugs came out for a day or so after. Would still go back though.

The Indian Ocean's a big place, Lois. Where in particular were you thinking about?

Ah, OK, my mistake!

Well, I suppose the three popular IO destinations are the Seychelles, Mauritius and Maldives.

Seychelles: SE Trades May- Sept. Drier, a bit breezier, slightly cooler. NW Trades Oct - April. Calmer, a bit more humid. Rainier. April and Oct are transition months, when conditions are a bit of both, usually for the better. Late Sept would be nice for you.

Maldives: Monsoonal. NE Monsoon Jan - March is dry. SW Monsoon May - November. Lots of rain and less sunshine.

As an indication:

Not brilliant in my opinion...

Mauritius is similar in many ways to the Seychelles. Sept would be drier than average, but also a little cooler. Winds end to be from the east.

I don't know what budget you have, but would you consider Madagascar?

A little cooler than the other three places, but a lot less rain, and an amazing country, with incredible rainforests, plains of baobab trees, lemurs etc plus wonderful beaches. I find the Maldives a little "cliché" to be honest. If you're not into watersports or sitting on the beach reading a book they're as boring as hell. At least the Seychelles and Mauritius have something else to offer, and Madagascar would be a leap above them by some factor...

HTHs! smile

South Africa...? And I mean Kwazulu-Natal coast. Keep away from Durban (high crime) and find a secluded resort.

I've just come back from fourteen nights at Reethi Rah in the Maldives - 13 days of sun and one day of rain. We were there a week later last year and had a similar experience.

Tell me about it. Got back from the 4 Seasons in Seychelles 2wks ago.
Average meal for 2 without wine = £200. 2 Pina Colada's = £30. etc.

I could go on, but my therapist recommends I don't dwell on it hehe

No AI in this sort of place. The wine list goes up to the stratosphere. You could spend several hundred dollars on a shot of cognac and even $70 on some swanky tequila. The wine list was bloody good though and not more expensive than a London restaurant, in fact cheaper (ot rather less extortionate) in most instances
