I'm thinking of doing an overland tour through Zimbabwe, Mozambique and South Africa - specifically this one: http://www.kumuka.com/Mozambique-Islands-and-Wildl....

I've been overlanding before (Dragoman through Kenya/TZ/Uganda/Rwanda), so used to the whole concept, but having read the FCO country profile for Zimbabwe, I have to admit to being a little aprehensive. I know you have to consider what a country profile for the UK would look like, but the Zimbabwe one is really quite bad! Mozambique less so, although I'd definately try and avoid the November election.

Has anyone travelled through these countries recently? Is it as bad as suggested or fine with sensible precautions?

Thanks for the help smile

We have an option on our books with Acacia in Zim. It is a conservation style project working with the anti-poaching teams and seems to sell well for them. I haven't heard of many people overlanding there recently, but an old friend who was born there describes it as a beautiful country if you can get to the best bits smile

AH ben, thought I might see you hear! Thanks for the help. Seems Oasis did susend travels to Zimbabwe, but have now started going back. THing is, it isn't even on the FCO advise against travel to parts of lists.

You don't happen to know the cheapest way to get into vic falls and out of joburg? Cheapest I've found is a round trip to joburg (Air France/KLM) for £350 and then a connection JNB->VFA for £137 with South African Airways. Any good flight deals with STA at the moment? Don't suppose you have a discount on Kumuka? smile

I don't think we have any discounts with Kumuka but will have a double check. I'll look at the flight options but again those seem good prices to me.

I've just got back a few days ago from driving across Zim in a 1973 Series 3 Land Rover. Didn't have any problems and the place seemed fine. There are police checkpoints every now and again, but they are not a problem.

At no point did we feel threatened, or looked at 'badly'. Infact, South Africa felt much more intimidating. Whether or not the actual threat was worse in Zim, we have no idea, but it certainly didn't feel like it.
What it did feel like though was a spectacularly beautiful country with amazing scenery in places.
Harare also took me by shock. I was expecting some sort of derelict town, but instead it was full of tree lined avenues and the city centre seemed very modern and accomodating compared to other African cities.

Just remember, the FCO advises against travel to a lot of places. As long as you don't invite trouble, you'll probably be fine.
