Has anyone been to Istanbul? I was wondering if it's a suitable place for a week away next year for the OH and myself.

Thinking part city break, part beach holiday. What are the beaches like in the area?

About 20 yrs ago drove to Istanbul from from Gallipoli, beaches a bit odd for Westerners, women bathing in full black body protection, no ice creams or alcohol just bagels, cafes sold no alcohol just tea and everyone eating big piles of cashew nuts.
My girlfriend went into the sea in a bikini and was swarmed by youths frantic with excitement.............I had no effect on the women

Saw no beaches in Istanbul, spent 3 days there and just saw the sights, quite impressive in an historical sort of way, pestered a lot by begging children and shop vendors, very friendly and safe place though and found it far more "Eastern" than the coast further South.

Spent a day there on business so not really qualified to comment...but I will tongue out and I won't be rushing back.
There are many, many, more satisfying places to visit...

Probably worth looking at this thread http://www.pistonheads.com/gassing/topic.asp?h=0&a...

No beaches on the Bosphorus. The Black Sea was favoured by those stuck behind the Iron Curtain for beach resorts! Nearest to Istanbul is Kilyos on the Turkish European coast of the Black Sea.
