im thinking of going in february next year - hope its not too cold then mind...
things to do, why not catch a show on broadway, visit central park, go up the empire state building, watch the new york rangers play ice hockey at maddisson square gardens, visit ground zero, catch a city tour bus, go shopping...
i have found expedia quite good, you are probably looking at 1100 - 1200 for flights and hotel accomadation for 2 if you want a central location and an average jurys inn style hotel ....

You'll love NYC, go to ebookers.com and check the flight prices and hotels with them, cheaper than expedia and going direct. They had/have a deal on whereby you can fly to JFK with Virgin and stay in Sherington Towers (amongst others) for £550 per person all in. For an extra £50 you could stay at Essex house!!
If I hadn't paid for skiing I'd have booked it. When I went out last year I spent £580 on flight and £300 on accomodation on the upper east side.
