Looking for long weekend at the end of November. Malta cost wise is spot on mid 20s temperature and peanuts.
So? Is it crap, expensive once your there?

I went... I saw churches, and endless prattle about the knights of Saint John./ Night life was 'ok' in St Julians Bay, but certainly nothing to write home about. Personally, I'd head elsewhere.

(Saying that, if you hunt out the WWII side of things, it can be interesting).

I'd love to go purely for the Knights of St John history - fascinating stuff.

I used to have a villa in Malta, in Mellieha in the North, and still and holiday there several times most years. Take no notice of anyone who says it's crap, they probably have never even left their hotel, and are talking out of their acensorede

What kind of things do you like to do?

Malta is a wonderful Island with very friendly people.

I spent a couple weeks in Malta, and enjoyed the place. The people seem to come from another age and many are quite devout Catholics. Meeting men younger than me with beliefs of my grandparents' generationn was a bit of an eye opener. The place is a bit colourless except for the busses. The roads get very slippy in the rain. I think there were only a couple traffic lights operatiuonal when I was there last, just about 10 years ago.

Churches, fortifications and castles. Very interesting. The Caravagio and the like are impressive.

Well, perhaps that was a bit of an overstatement, smile but I've heard it SO many times..."There's nothing to do"....It turns out they have never left Bugibba or St. Julians..... Worth going if only to see the War museum, Lascaris barracks, Mdina, (pronounced IMDINA), Mosta dome, Republic Street Valletta, Fort Rinella etc, etc.......

I did all the churches, (Christ, there are so many), and the Dome was cool, BUT, my point was that it can all get a bit "Knights of St John, Knights of Saint John, Knights of St John, Knights of Saint John, Knights of St John, Knights of Saint John, Knights of St John, Knights of Saint John, Knights of St John, Knights of Saint John, Knights of St John, Knights of Saint John, Knights of St John, Knights of Saint John, Knights of St John, Knights of Saint John" if you know what I mean.

I think you will be amazed how much it has changed in the last three years...

Many of the quaint old 50's buses have gone..(Not all), and since the influx of EEC money main roads are more like motorway surfaces.

One of the biggest internal problems facing Malta atm is illegal immigrants from Libia, and an increasing drugs trade.

I will be going again in March for ANOTHER excellent holiday....biggrin

I wonder what would happen if you ran down the street shouting "The knights templar were harder"?

You'd get beaten to death with a fish.

I went for a week with Little Trackside last year and we had a great time. For a tiny island there is LOADS to do. We spent every day doing something. What's the Knights of St John? We obviously did everything else but that!!

never did the historical bits and bobs then?

Oh, on a sidenote, I was scarred for life when I was in malta. I was snorkeling off the coast, (about 10m off), looking at the fish, and all that stuff, and it was all very nice, when a ruddy great speedboat went past, and it's wake lifted me up, and dropped me on the rocks... Not only did it drop me on the rocks, but it dropped me on a bloody spiny urchin thingy, which promptly left a stload of spines in me, which made a huge crater in my chest, and me in the hotel, picking the spines out with a needle, and some antiseptic... Not great.

I've been to Gozo, rather than Malta itelf (though we had to pass though Malta to get there). It was absolutely lovely and one of the only place on the list for at least one revisit, if not more ...

I remember Mdina, and standing on the walls, as I think that was where a lot of the footage from WWII was taken, of Malta being bombed. Great view from there.

I don't think they had enough WWII history stuff, when I was there anyway. A lot of church tours, and Mdina, etc, but for some reason there was absolutely zero info about WWII. Srt of ruined it for me. The other historical stuff was nice, but as I said, I soon got fed up of hearing 'those' people time after time, after time.
