...where would it be and why?

You have lots of friends in the UK, £2m, a lovely wife, two young children and in your mid 30's

On the shore of Lake Naivasha, Kenya. And somewhere in Italy. And here.

Just north. Marin County. Mill Valley, Tiberon, or Belvadere.

Assuming I didn't want my kids to go to boarding school, and that I had to work, somewhere in one of the villages surrounding Bath. Good schools, work in Bath/Bristol/London/Cardiff, lots of nice property available.

If I was happy for my kids to board, then French/Swiss Alps within striking distance of Geneva for work and flights.

How about somewhere like Bordeaux? The climate is good, you have plenty to do, could get a bit of land, a couple of extra cottages on the property for holiday lets, some horses and other animals. The children can go to local school, maybe board back in the UK when they're older. Close to the UK to get back and should get plenty of visitors.

I also thought of California with a similar sort of set-up, but never been to west coast USA. The climate again should be fantastic with mountains, lakes and beaches not far away. You shouldn't have to work for a while, and less of a language barrier. You wouldn't see much of your family or friends though.

Love the far east but the heat becomes too oppressive after a period of time. Fantasy islands like the Carribbean or Mauritius are also lovely for a couple of weeks but you start to get bored with limited lifestyle. The UK has some beautiful places and the nicer summer days are unbeatable. I can't take the endless grey days though and unreliable summers.

Southern California, probably between San Diego and LA. Maybe Rancho Santa Fe, but not sure if 2 mil would be enough.
