...so no mandarin oriental! stayed at vieng thai before. basically want somewhere near khoa san road. going travelling round thailand for 3 weeks and its just for the first night or 2. would like somewhere with some character, or unusual....same aplies for most other places in thailand actually.

I'm at hotel de moc at the moment - best bit is the owners collection of classic cars in the car park. Clean and reasonably priced and not far from kho San road. Might be worth a look.
If you are heading north (and you should) go to Chiang Mai. Expedia did me a great deal on the Shangri-La so I got five star luxury for £50 per night. Also, if you fancy doing a trek, go to Buddy Tours in Chiang Mai. I paid £30 for three days all in, some of the others on the same trek went through agents and all paid at least double that, and some nearly £100.
To be honest I can't wait to leave Bangkok - it's Amsterdam on steroids and not my cup of tea. Fortunately am flying out tomorrow - the other thread has loads of good recomendations from people who do like the place though.

There is a glut of hotels at that price - even some 5 star ones like Lebua can be had for £50 occasionally.

Not hugely close to KS Road (why would you want to be?!!), but instead a lot better placed to see the sights etc: http://www.arunresidence.com/
If that's a bit too quirky for you, check out Trip Advisor, then look for the best deals on: www.wotif.com
