I'm at hotel de moc at the moment - best bit is the owners collection of classic cars in the car park. Clean and reasonably priced and not far from kho San road. Might be worth a look.

If you are heading north (and you should) go to Chiang Mai. Expedia did me a great deal on the Shangri-La so I got five star luxury for £50 per night. Also, if you fancy doing a trek, go to Buddy Tours in Chiang Mai. I paid £30 for three days all in, some of the others on the same trek went through agents and all paid at least double that, and some nearly £100.

To be honest I can't wait to leave Bangkok - it's Amsterdam on steroids and not my cup of tea. Fortunately am flying out tomorrow - the other thread has loads of good recomendations from people who do like the place though.

If you are going to the TAT offices, only book your journeys (bus etc) through them. Went earlier this year and booked accomodation witht them as well. Upon arriving at said places we found that we could have had it for half the price had we just turned up.

Enjoy!

we are travelling around with a few nights in Bangkok as a base. Found a place called Refill Now, cheap, clean, a bit unusual, altho maybe more modern than you are looking for? Check it out

There is a glut of hotels at that price - even some 5 star ones like Lebua can be had for £50 occasionally.

Used them for years, great service.

Not hugely close to KS Road (why would you want to be?!!), but instead a lot better placed to see the sights etc: http://www.arunresidence.com/

If that's a bit too quirky for you, check out Trip Advisor, then look for the best deals on: www.wotif.com

why not stay in town? ill ask my brother he works in bangkok and couldnt be bothered to get his own place so lives in hotels, changes each month for something different.
