Hello all.

Here are the criteria:
-Budget is approx £1000-1500
-Just me & missus, so one double/ suite required
-Date will be later on in January 2010
-Place MUST be within the UK, as missus won't be able to re-enter the UK if she leaves , although she has right to remain (visa will be pending/ processing)
-Can't be in Pembrokeshire or SW Wales, as that's where I live!

Your suggestions please!

What sort of things do you like to do?

If it's quiet stuff, I'd say Scotland is worth a visit. Otherwise, there's always Blackpool...

  • Time in the Lakes/Highlands (skiing?)/Snowdonia/Yorkshire Dales/etc
  • Coastal scenery in Devon/Cornwall/Scilly Isles/Channel Isles/Hebrides/etc

Depends on what you like doing.

If you are outdoorsy I'd stay here:

http://www.westburncottage.co.uk/Westburn_Cottage/

Then spend a couple of weeks in the area walking and eating far too well in the pubs. The kitchen is fantastic - so if you like cooking you can have fun doing that and the local produce is excellent.

For your budget you can stay for two weeks and have plenty of spending money.

I have no relation to the owner - just a happy customer.

Either West Coast of Scotland or Perthshire for me. It depends if you want any city time during the trip as you could always visit Edinburgh in the same trip as the Highlands or go to somewhere in Northumbria instead smile

Could have said its a kind of honeymoon, couldn't I? I understand the area being quiet isn't a problem. Coastal scenery and surrounding countryside/ footpaths etc to explore will be good.

A city break at the end of the holiday may be nice, but its not the main aim.

Historical or archaeological aspects or places to visit nearby would be nice too, she certainly has a historical interest, but she also told me that she doesn't mind if we don't leave the hotel much. Preference would be more hotel than a cottage/ self-service (is that what I'm trying to say) place.

Oops pressed submit before I wrote anything! silly

If she likes history, what about Hadrians Wall? And then a quick trip across the border to do a City Break in Edinburgh.

For walking, the Peaks is beautiful.

How about a night or two in the Lakes somewhere then head up to the West Highlands - http://www.thetorridon.com/ comes highly recommended. Fantastic scenery, great driving roads that will be empty at that time of year and possibly snow on the hills but unlikely to be down at sea level.

If the Yorkshire Dales interests you then I can suggest Simonstone Hall near Hawes. Easy access to either the Lake District to the west or the North York Moors to the east. Lots of good/excellent eating places - the hotel does great food too.

Ok, sounds like it'll be Lake District-ish area followed by West Scotland. Any further recommendations for the two places?

How about starting in the Highlands doing walks and taking in Britains best scenery. It might even be possible to go skiing which is always a good laugh.

Then you can end it by spending a few days in Edinburgh and get your city break / history fix there. Edinburgh is also a really nice city to just walk around and enjoy with your girl.

I can thoroughly recommend The Drunken Duck Inn just south of Ambleside in the Lakes. Great service, great food, great wines and beers (brewed on site) and close to fantastic places to walk (both high and low level).

The George hotel in Inverary on the west coast (argyll) is absolutely brilliant, amazing drive up (and I'm a scot so I have seen much of it) and the hotel is just fabulous, go for the merchants room or a deluxe master if you can, all got special features. There are just an abundance of things to there. Have a look at the hotel website, they list all of the attractions.
