For the first time our two kids will be away on a school trip at the same time, so we're thinking about going away for a short break. We'll have from the time we drop the kids at school on Monday at about 9:30 to Thursday at 3pm, when we pick the younger one up (the older one comes back on Friday).

I'd like to have the option to come back early in case of an emergency, so am thinking about a trip to a nice hotel in northern France, or possibly staying in England - although that somehow doesn't feel like a holiday to me!

So, suggestions please! So far I've looked at Le Touquet, the Pas de Calais and that sort of area. I'm happy to drive a way if I'm not stuck on autoroutes all the way.

I'm not too worried about cost within reason!

There is only one place to go for a short break in France in June and thats Le Mans.

Sorted I think.

Indeed - came across this just now:

but I'd appreciate any personal recommendations.

fly to Milan (Bergamo)- Ryanair actually seem to be reliable on that route.

Stay in the old town.

Take train to Varenna

Take ferry to Bellagio

Enjoy lovely food and wine.

Thanks - I've been to Bellagio a couple of times before, and it's very nice. Unfortunately my wife has a mobility problem, and with the need to get back at short notice I think flying (especially Ryanair) is out.

Rennes and the surrounding area are very pretty and quite culturally interesting. Couple of hours' drive from Saint-Malo.
