Greece May 2010 help !
Discussion
Dear all
Fancying two weeks in Greece in May next year.We have never been so ideas and suggestions would be much appreciated.
We are looking for a villa with pool for between 3 & 5 people and would prefer somewhere fairly quiet & secluded.
Anyone got something similar for rent ?
Can the PH massive help ?

We have a Villa on the Greek Island of Rhodes. it's a 3 bed, 3 bath detached villa with private pool. Have a look at our website, www.afandouhills.com for more info. on the Villa and Rhodes. There are also links to airlines servicing the island. Feel free to give me a call or drop me a mail if you'd like to discuss further.

Thanks man will have a look later Can recommend these guys www.jamesvillas.co.uk we have stayed in there villas a few times and have just booked another for next year! I can definately recommend Skopelos as you get a great Greek experience as its a lovely small quiet island! though we went to Lefkas last year and it was fantastic! kephalonia is also lovely though a little busy in some parts and Rhodes is very nice if you avoid the busy spots.
We've used
http://www.simpsontravel.com/
and
http://www.ionianislandholidays.com/
These people usually have prety good quality properties and offer some good early season deals for May as well.
I'd say at this time of year it won't be busy at all, although the sun will be warm, it will be cold at night and the pool might be a bit chilly.
I'd highly recommend northern Corfu, Northern Kefalonia, Paxos, and Parga, which would have to be my favourite.

Complete virgin to Greece so the info is greatly appreciated.
Are there any island or places you like the look/sound of? the greek islands are extremely varied and are all completely different! some busy, some quiet, some green some covered in mountains or semi desert! would you prefer a lively resort or a pieceful getaway? there is a place in Greece for everyone if you have an idea what you want!

Not sure what dates you are going or where you will end up, but the Tall Ships Races are taking place in Volos from the 9th - 12th May 2010.
They are always free events (rare thing these days!). The big firework display will be on the evening of the 11th with the fleet leaving under a Parade of Sail on the 12th.
There's currently 8 of the big tall ships booked in, with many more to follow no doubt. More info here:

With the other half being Greek there are certainly some nice places I have visited over the years (head out for Christmas this year too, which should be good - but very cold)
All very lovely people and great food.
It all depends what you want out of the holiday, if you fancy something really secluded, properly local and not a chance of bumping into any other tourist then you could head for the Pilio region (which is mainland Greece so you are looking at flying to Athens or Thessaloniki and hiring a car (2-3hrs drive)). Also good if you want to take in some of the ancient Greek sites. Also from Pilio you can get a boat and spend time at Skiathos and Skopelos (where they filmed Mamma Mia), most of the youngsters will speak English but the older generation may not speak too much.
Though going in May it can be hit or miss if some of the more secluded areas are open for tourists as it depends heavily on if it is hot or not to whether they open up earlier in the season. So you may want to look at some of the islands to stay at. Rhodes will be the warmest being far south, but not the prettiest or nicest island (it is good, but there are so many other gems IMO). Though if you do fancy it stay away from Falaraki, Rhodes Town is ok but very busy and Lindos is the prettiest but still can be full of loud nightclubs.
I think the mainland does get a little overlooked with so many nice islands so don't discount it and it is very easy to drive around with a good road network connecting the major cities (actually drove to Greece one year and some of the mountain passes were more fun than the alps).
I got married in Volos this year in May and it was a very nice temperature, though the sea hasn't fully warmed up yet in the Med. If you need any more help I have a lot of in-law relatives in the country so PM or write below.

One of our ships will also be alongside in Volos between 1st - 8th May, so if you and the family fancy a visit before the event and the crowds start then give me a shout. If you don't mind, I might just pick your brains for local knowledge as we've never been there before.
Sounds like a deal to me, if you need any help with local arrangements then give me a shout. MonkeyMatt said:

We tend to seek out classier more peaceful locations with a decent beach or two for the young un.A couple of decent bars/restaurants would be nice to wander to in the evening.
Again superb response thankyou.I will trawl through the ideas & suggestions with swmbo this evening.

Can recommend Rhodes,... Watch when you want to go as it can get really hot during the summer.
and the airport can be an absolute nightmare.Car hire guys meet you at the gate and drop off is easy too. We get discounts for our guests too which also helps.
I can't recommend Kefalonia highly enough. The other half and I went this year and the island has much to offer. The north is a lot quiter then the South but everything is also a lot further spread out. I stayed in Katelios with James Villas and is the second time I've used them, again a very good opperator but probably slightly cheaper to book direct with a villa owner. Fiskado is nice but very touristy so struggles to have that local element, if you want to go to the north then I would prefer Assos. Personally I was very happy with Katelios as there were a fair few locals out every night and about 20 local resataurants and a number of bars to choose from.
Just found this - hope the OP doesn't mind a bit of a hijack (although on topic).
We are just looking at villa holidays for late May and the Greek islands have caught my eye. It'll just be the two of us and we tend to like realxing, peaceful holidays. A little bit away from the crouds. We are not fans of sitting on the beach and tend more to get out and about walking. I'm a fan of mountainous scenery with great views.
With the above in mind I'm not sure which island is likely to suit our needs the most. We'll probably go for seven nights.
Any thoughts?
Most villas seem more adapted to four or more occupants, so tend to be a little expensive for just two.
