Dear all,

Firstly, thanks to Big Al for suggesting Vienna for my Slovakian mini break.

Secondly, I was planning to head over to Hong Kong for New Years to see some old friends, and then head off into SE Asia. However, it does seem rather expensive this time of year (thanks for the £200 envy tax, Goredoom).

Where else would anyone recommend for a lively (ie not couples) couple of weeks for a lone traveller, with plenty of variety to keep me entertained (and decent weather) - ideally SE Asia, but could be anywhere if I have missed something!! Budget is up to about 2k for 2 weeks, leaving 28/29th December and getting back for Friday 15th Jan.

Thanks in advance!

I'd recommend Vietnam if you can find reasonably priced flights. Your money will go a long way and there are plenty of good threads in this forum with loads of tips for where to go/where to stay etc.

The only issue might be getting flights although if you are looking to book asap then you might find something reasonably priced. You could also look at flying into Bangkok then getting a cheap Air Asia flight into Vietnam to leave more cash for the fun stuff smile

Although looking at your profile picture perhaps you've already been? Is that the war museum in Hanoi? smile

Saigon actually wink That was last year's trip smile

Still plenty of stuff to do over there, I only really did Saigon and Mui Nei, so wouldn't rule it out, though last time I went it was out of season, so very quiet outside of the City.

Ideally would like to be in HK for New Years - I take it flights won't be getting any cheaper... frown

I was looking for flights to Hanoi for someone on Saturday and they were looking at £1500 to fly just before Xmas and home just after NYE! If you've already visited Vietnam then how about Cambodia or even Laos in that region?

What is your idea of cheap? They were £500 return last time I checked a month or so ago.

Emirates are the cheapest I can find this morning. Looking at £720 ish.

That's what it was at the weekend when I looked - I guess they aren't going to get any cheaper either? Hopefully accomodation won't be an issue, and hopefully I can economise elsewhere.

Where else has decent weather over New Years that I haven't considered?

Neither are exactly 'lively' though...

Malaysia probably worth a look - depending on what you want to do, there's Langkawi (beach), Cameron Highlands, KL (although S'pore supposed to be better, and not too far away), and Sabah (N. Borneo) is only 3 hours flight away...

I'd second the Malaysia idea actually if you prefer something more lively. Fingers crossed my next 'proper' trip will include a stop in Malaysia for a few days smile

Good stuff. Will be keen to know how you rate Malaysia as I'll have a week or so there and have only done KL and the stretch from there to Singapore in the past.
