As above really, Mexican Pesos or USD - which would be best?

I'm thinking Pesos are better value, given current exchange rates, but could someone confirm?

I've only ever done day trips from San Diego to Mexico, and USD seems to be king and pesos very much unwanted - may depend where you're going and if it's a built up resort area or if you're backpacking through the villages.

I found the opposite to the above posters when I was there. Went with equal amount of Pesos and Dollars, returned home with most of my Dollars. The only places we used Dollars was for club entry in Cancun (uber touristy), everything else (including tips, taxis, buses, food) was in Pesos.

Oh and if there's a Dollar price and a Peso price for something (like a taxi fare) the Dollar price was always more expensive. It seemed to me like they were just catering for Americans who assumed the Dollar is king, when in fact they were getting ripped off every time.

Interesting feedback - thanks all.

We'll be basing selves S between Cancun & Tulum so on the main tourist strip, but will be going "up country" for several days, too, so sounds like I need both.
