I know some of you want to do China 2-wheeled adventures, I got as far as putting down a deposit on a 125 and buying a load of kit!

To self-drive/ride in China you have to book through a government approved tour company.
They will plan the route - with your input and apply to each province for permission, they have to avoid "sensitive areas"
They will apply for chinese driving licences and vehicle licences for you.

You have to pay an import bond to the government based on the value of your bike, this will be returned 1 month after you leave, the tour guide will act as handler.

Once you arrive in China, you have to go for a quick medical to get your driving licence.
If you brought your own vehicle into China, it has a MOT type test done.

If you buy in China the bike will have a kind of V5, matching to engine and chassis number.

  • Note* You can't ride m/bikes in major cities! You have to leave them at the outer ring road and taxi into town!
You can't ride m/bikes on highways - lovely nice new motorways. Only national roads, some are dirt tracks, some are under construction, so you need to be confident off road!

The driving is THE worst I have seen on my travels, seriously bad, you need to be hyper-aware of everyone. Trucks WILL try to drive you off the road - even in a car.

However, it's a stunning country, with amazing people!

We ended up hiring a long distance taxi driver, £40/day plus fuel & tolls, he brought his girlfriend and we had a smashing road trip with the other Oz ralliers.

We booked through www.navo-tour.com
