Recommend me a nice hotel - central ROME?

Have just come back from there, we stayed outside of Rome but saw a nice hotel in Piazza Barberini, its called the Hotel Bernini, its at the top of the sqaure is about 4 mins from the Trevi Fountain and then a further 2 mins past the fountain to the main street which pretty much has the Vatican at one end, the Colloseum and Forum at the other, with the Pantheon and Piazza Navara along it
Cant comment on the hotel itself as i didnt stay there but it looked nice and a quick google should get you a review

I went for a long weekend with SWMBO last year, we stayed in the Cosmopolita Hotel (http://www.tripadvisor.co.uk/Hotel_Review-g187791-d264643-Reviews-Cosmopolita_Hotel-Rome_Lazio.html)
Great location, everywhere is walk-able, all the squares/fountains are less than 10 mins away and even Vatican City is reachable after a nice walk across town.
The rooms are not the largest, but they were clean and in a good state of repair. Rome seemed to be one extreme or the other. Small but decent rooms, or palatial splendour with wall to wall marble (and a price to match!)

We landed at Rome Fiumcino airport, its about 25-30 mins out of Central Rome, their is a good train service to the centre though, its 11 Eur and you want to go to Trastevere or Termini...
I think a Cab is about 40 Eur but we didnt use one
When you are in Rome most of it is walkable, if you do decide to use the metro you can get a ticket from the machines for 1 Eur that lasts for 75 mins and allows you 1 Metro and 1 Bus ride
There are a number of deals around for the buses and a Tour Roma card (or something like that) which costs 23 Eur for 3 days and allows free entry into 2 attractions, we didnt use this and I dont think we were any worse off
Ignore the people at the Colloseum and the Vatican offering to guided tours to allow you to skip the queue, on comparing their prices we found them to be almost double
The queue for St Peter's looks quite overwhelming but in fact we found it only took about 45 mins, you dont pay to get into St Peters, you do pay to go to the top of the Cupola, 5 Eur if you want to walk it (551 Steps) 7 Eur for a lift part way (320 Steps) its quite a climb through some tight steps but ultimately worth it, we spent about 3 hours at St Peters and another 3 at the Vatican Museums
For the Colloseum, its 14 Eur for entry, this also gets you into the Forum as well though, we in fact did the Colloseum one day and the Forum the next on the same ticket, we spent about 1.5 hours doing the colloseum and about 2-2.5 at the Forum
Avoid at all costs having your photos taken with Centurions outside the Colloseum, treat them like chuggers dont even make eye contact, they will have your camera off you take 2 pics and then be very persistent for money, we got stung for 10 Eur and then met some brits who had been done for 15
Trevi Fountain and Pantheon were IMO the most impressive just becauase they are so complete and free, the area around Trevi is nice, lots of little piazzas and places to eat, not cheap though
I think thats about it really, its a lot of walking but well worth it and just as a favour from a Catholic, when you are in St Peters Basilica and the Sistine Chapel, please do take heed of the notices for quiet and no photos (Sistine only for the photos thing) they are churches, in St Peter's especially I was taking mass in one of the chapels only to have constant flash bulb popping and the Swiss Guard having to tell people (mainly yanks) to sssssssh

Agreed, I somewhat foolishly allowed the OH to sort this trip, I dont think to be fair to her she had realised it was them as she booked a package (I would have checked but I wont mention this for fear of invoking THE MENTAL)Leave early and walk/swim.

If in Rome, you simply HAVE to consider this beautiful hotel.
The Aldrovandi Palace. It's located by the Borghese Gardens, certainly not central, but in a lovely diplomatic area of the city.
The hotel provide a free courtesy car, to and from the Spanish Steps and 15 minute intervals.
It's right on the tram route with stops outside the hotel.
Whilst not central, it is well positioned with some good restaurants and cafes, very close by.
Rome can be very congested, hot and sticky in the summer months, so the superb pool at the hotel is a welcome relief. Most of the central hotels will not be able to offer this.

We stayed here in 2008 http://www.hotelcapodafrica.com/capoenglish.html Fantastic hotel, a couple of minutes walk to the Colosseum. We booked through expedia and got BA flights and 4 nights in the hotel for less than £280 per person.
If you travel by rail from the airport to the city be sure to get your ticket stamped at the machines before you board the train. If you don't you will face a hefty fine and the zealous conductors are not to be reasoned with. I've seen so many people falling foul, most of them having bought a valid ticket but innocently not realising it needs stamped outside.

Another vote for this hotel, we stayed here this August for less than £120 per night including breakfast.http://www.iqhotelroma.it/
Stayed there a couple of weeks ago, inexpensive & great value for money, ranks well on Tripadvisor too.
