Muscat, Oman. Shangri-la bar al-jissah or another hotel there for tighter budgets. 7 hours direct flight.

When you say not long-haul, is that because you don't want jet-lag, or you don't want to sit in a plane for hours on end?

Cape Town is a great destination at this time...

Hmmm that could work, so is it hot on the beach and within Budget and safe?

Cape Town should be in the mid to high 20s at this time of year. If you go inland, it goes up to the 30s.

Within budget? SA is cheap to eat out in (but not as cheap as it used to be), flights at short notice will probably be £600-£800 each if including a Sat night. You can get a decent hotel room for £60-70 per night.

BA, Virgin and SAA all fly direct - it will be cheaper, but more painful to fly via Joburg (2 hour internal flight).

Yes I can only second the South Africa idea. Fantastic at this time of year. I have family near Cape Town and more family members going over for Xmas and I'm incredibly jealous of them smile

Depends what you want really. I'm off with the family next week for 9 days in Tenerife ~£900 for return flights and 3* 2 bed apartment in a quiet part of los cristianos.

ok, its not exotic but its been 23deg C + all this week, thats about as low as it gets in the winter.

Lots of big clean beaches and the place we go to has 3 pools, one heated, my kids love it. (age 9 and 11)

Its slef catering so you have to eat out so not *quite* as convenient as a hotel, but on the plus side the apartments have 2 bedrooms, 2 toilets, 3 balconies and huge rooms which I prefer.

What's the complex called? We're looking at doing the same in March next year. Thanks

Egypt. Warm 20-28c, cheap this time of year, 4 hour flight and decent all inclusive hotels (there are some crap ones, but the holiday websites tell you which).

Only downside is it gets dark early, but that is a problem if you stay north of the equator in Dec....

Canary Island will be perfect if you have a little one! plenty of resorts from quiet to busy depending on what you want! Cape Verde, Madeira, Malta and Cyprus may also be worth a look!

Cristian Sur apartments. 2 (or is it 3 cant remember) pools in the complex, not heated so a bit cold. But yuou can also use the facilities of the Tenerif Sur across the road, this has a big heated pool (heated meaning cold but ok for the kids the spend hours in) , bar, snack bar etc.

We always book a 2 bedroom apartment as they are much bigger, its about a 15 min walk to the beach but its not a difficult walk, same distance into the main town.

I prefer being out of town as its quiet.

Theres also a british couple that hire cars based at the same apartment block that do very good deals (not the one by reception but at the far end of the complex).

There is a supermarket on site and 24 hour reception.

This year I booked flights through Mondarch for £9.99 each way plus taxes. Apartment was around £400 for 9 days booked through ASDA travel (no seriously they were the cheapest!).

go to this website, the pic on the right shows the tenerife sur pool, that hut in the middle is the bar. http://www.cristiansurapartments.co.uk/
