I'm thinking of doing a day trip to Calais with the misses.

I would like to stay within an hour or so of the Calais end of the tunnel (for lunch) with the idea of driving around for a bit and maybe doing a little bit of shopping or something else.

So, does anyone have any suggestions for lunch within that area (1 hour or so from the end of the tunnel)??

And what else in that area to do?

Was wondering about getting out the tunnel, turning right and driving for an hour or so and then branching into the country side to see what we can find...but I like to be a little more organised than that!! haha

Honestly can't be arsed with Paris - a little too far to go...although I would love to do that!

Any suggestions??

Cheers

Good show. Any chance for a cheap shot at Calais is worth it. Then there's Le Havre...

That would get my vote. Nothing special but a nice sea front with nice French Restaurants.

Calais, is indeed a sthole, however it class restraunts if you know where to go.

Le Touquet is far and away the best place within an hour's drive of Calais, Boulogne-sur-mer is also fairly decent, both are west of Calais with Boulogne being the nearer.

Sat nav goes bannanas all the time trying to faind where its going anywhere around the eurotunnel. You do get used to the roads quick though - just the bloody signs are confusing...

Not Much in Calais. Hypermarket is distinctley average - best shop in there is the Tesco wine store - fill your boot.

Not explored much else around - only stop off on the way back from Champagne/Reims or Paris.

We often go 10km south down the coast - village called Wissant. Two restaurants, next door to each other in the central square.

Full of Brits and Belgians.

It was a 5hithole when I first went there aged about 9, and it was no better when I passed through last year!

We've stopped in Saint Omer about 25 mins South East from Calais which is a nice enough town with a few decent hotels and restaurants around the main square.

ETA - things to do near there include a huge hypermarket to fill the car with booze, and the site of one of the WW2 V Rocket launchers.

Whist Calais is indeed a sthole, I found an absolute gem of a restaurant there a few months back. Restaurant Au Cote D'Argent, 1, Digue Gaston-Berthe, Calais. Right on the water, not at all a romantic location but it was great, fantastic food, very good price, great service and the chef came to join us for a chat at the end of the meal. Very friendly, I can still taste the lobster bisque mmmmmmm
Had a choice of several different menus, from a quick lunch through to a proper gastro-fest.

As this is PH, I must highly recommend the D940 that runs from Calais through Cap Gris-Nez, Blanc-Nez, Wissant etc. Used to be part of the Rally stage back in the day. Some great hairpins, sweeping bends, nice straights etc. My advice, go out there early, do a tank of petrol going up and down the D940, buy some cheese in St Omer or Cite Europe (if you're that way inclined) then go to Cote D'Argent for lunch biggrin

The D940 is indeed a blinding road, I live in Calais and work in Boulogne so it's my favorite back road route!

+1 on Boulogne - get inside the walls of the city and it's really quite nice. It still has the hypermarkets on the outskirts too

The food sounds great in that restaurant!!

I am thinking that we will probably go straight there for lunch and then head along the D940 along the coast down to somewhere like Boulogne, stop for patiseries (sp?!) and then come back to the tunnel for the trip home.

Oh, and only 1 misses!! Fill yer boot you say?? Not too likely to be honest - Only a MX5!!

Cheers

Bruges every time! Only one hour drive from Sangatte. Ghent is also nice and a little bit further.

If you're a history buff - Vimy Ridge - near Arras about 1 hour down the A26. And there's Cassel, near Dunkerque - the hill of "Grand Old Duke of York" fame and a beautiful town with a many nice restaurants and a picturesque Grande Place.

Use www.viamichelin.com to do your trip planning and find restaurants.

I will probably regret posting this but we often stay/eat at a place called the Buffet at Isberques. Its near Aire sur la Lys, about 40 mins from calais, doesnt look much but fantastic retaurant and great rooms and feels like France compared to seaside cafes near Calais. Bet I can never get in again now.
