Thinking of going to Cuba in May, thinking of staying in Veradero which is the tourist part as we fancy doing the general tourist things tbh, beaches, swim with dolphins and a bit of scuba diving etc.

Just wondered if anyone had been? Any tips or reccomendations of things to do. Only looking to spend about a grand each all inclusive.

Went to Varadero Jan 09 after 4 nights in Havana. The beach is supposed to be the best in the Carib and is lovely yes, plus that warm water. The food is a bit dull but the booze is all in so who cares! Buy cigars on the beach, £20 for a box of 25, they are £18 each here! There is a great golf course at the end of the beach and they bring beers round on a cart (I am crap but still enjoyed playing). Cant remember much else except that we were in a party of ten and I told my other half's sister in law to f*** off....... we arent together now. hehe

Re meeting the dolphins....don't do it...feels wrong....like an old school circus......captive dolphins have a very odd look in their eyes (I am not joking) If you want to see dolphins learn to dive and see them in the sea...

I went there last summer with the family for a week (I know only a week, blame the parents) we spent two days in Havana, with a tour bus, which don't get me wrong was great and the guide was brilliant, and by all means go for one, but if you want to really explore Havana just explore it yourself, it's great. We stayed near Holguin and the beach thing isn't really for me, I'd have preferred to have spent much more time in Havana. As for the women thing, there was one dark-skinned girl in our tour group and when we split up into smaller groups she did get hassled quite a lot by men and women alike. Quite odd really, this old women kept asking her where her children were, and when she said she didn't have any she kept asking her more questions. Other than that it was fine. The Tropicana Club in Havan is also well worth a visit.

Just spent christmas there, got back last week.
The weather is ace the sea is warm. women don't get hassled but you might get annoyed tipping people for everything all the time ( the locals can't earn cuc's so they rely on tourists to tip them ) varadero is nice enough, the beaches are clean and the sea is warm. It's correct that varadero is not the real cuba but it is a nice relaxing base to travel to other tourist hotspots from. Old havana is a right pit but worth seeing and new havana is mental.

We stopped at the blau varadero 4*. The hotel was nice and clean but not as good as some 4*'s we have stopped in the food was abysmal but we coped.
you need to understand how poor these people are and how hard it is to import goods although they may well be trading with the usa when you go.

Get the catamaran cruise to cayo blanco vvvv nice !

Overall we loved it the people are ace. Get it booked.

if you want to see some pics I have put some on my facebook if you add me as a friend.... Noel A
