quick question - do u have to put laptops in cabin baggage or can they go in the hold - if so are they ok in the hold?

Do NOT put it in hold luggage unless its a) backed up and b) you're insured and fancy a new one. It will get broken.

Apart from the risk of damage and theft (esp. if going ANYWHERE long haul), I'd be concerned about the LCD display being damaged by the low temperatures.

Take it in hand luggage, you'll probably have to take it out for scanning so have it handy.
