As above really, friend of mine needs a passport pretty quick (current one about to expire) but she's lost her birth certificate.

Any ideas as to what to do?

You sure? Haven't renewed mine for quite a few years so can't remember!

Correct. Don't even need to have the photo or form countersigned if you are recognisably the same person in the photo of your existing passport. [NB existing passport must be undamaged]

^^^^ What he said. Daughter had to renew hers today coincidentally! Cost £77 mind, that seems lots more than when I renewed mine last time around (8 years ago I think)

Okay - have just been chatting (thanks to this thread). She has changed her name since last passport (got divorced) so any idea of such implications?

Easy to get replacement birth certificate from registrar of births . They will only give you a certificate with original details. Afaik . Will be available at the same office as the registration was recorded originally.

I assume she'd just have to send in the divorce papers in the same way the mrs just had to send in her marriage cert when she renewed.

All she did was send in the old passport, new photo and marriage cert.

She'd had the wrong name on her passport for 10 years as she'd got it for our honeymoon, obviously in her maiden name and never remembered to change it. Every time we travelled, it was "oh, I must get it changed" and she never did. She just booked in her maiden name.

okay, well the flight's booked in her current name so I guess that doesn't help?

If you need a replacement birth certificate you can order them here:

http://www.gro.gov.uk/gro/content/certificates/

In fact you can get one for anybody you like as they are not a form of proof of identity.

However all you need to know about passport renewal is here:

http://www.direct.gov.uk/en/TravelAndTransport/Pas...

You don't need a birth cert.
