Can anyone recommend a firm other than Hertz who will do this?

Looking for a fun vehicle, something like a Mustang or Corvette convertible.

Most of the big rental companies will do a one way rental - you'll just get charged extra for the privilage (although not quite so much if you are picking up/dropping off at major centres as you intend).

I did it once with Avis out of SF - but dropped off at San Luis Obispo ('bout halfway down to LA) so it did cos a few quid.

Yes but most of the big rental companies don't supply the kind of cars I want to hire!

I've used carhireagency.com a lot and done different drop off locations at no extra charge sometimes.
