We're looking to book a family holiday to the Orlando area in the summer and it's been 4 years and 11 years since we were there last. Both of the last visits were to the gulf coast and we had a great time (last time our son was about 3, but now he's 10 and his sister is 7).

Last time we went to Orlando it seemed to be packed with pikey Brits in football shirts and Germans. Germans I can deal with, pikey Brits I can't (well I can but prefer not to!).

We're likely staying in a private villa, but is the area still packed with pikey Brits??

Not full - but yes, there are usually plenty of knuckle-draggers around the more predictable scum-hives (I-Drive touron hotels, Lake B/Vista, Kissimmee, Poinciana, Davenport/Haines City).

I've been for the last two years and haven't encountered one German.

Come to think of it, all I encountered were Yanks (obviously) and Brits.

There is a football-shirt contingent out there but it's Orlando - there's a bit of everything there really.

If you go on holiday to be impressed by the tourists who are there with you, don't go.
If you go on holiday to have fun with the kids then you won't have a problem wink

Plenty of German tourists visit - there is a daily Lufthansa flight from Frankfurt.
Whilst I agree that if you let the calibre of your fellow holidaymakers determine your destination, you would limit yourself to a large degree, I would share the OP's concern about the number of utter morons who arrive from UK and Ireland for holidays and become a total pain in the arse for the people that live and work in the area, as well as other vacationers who are just trying to enjoy a pleasant family experience.
I go to significant lengths to avoid any kind of contact with British visitors, because so many of them are dirt-bags who can't handle their liqour and seek any opportunity for confrontation.
The only problems I have ever encountered have been with shaven-headed, heavily tattoed, horribly sunburned, football shirt wearing English/Scottish/Irish (no Taffies, happily) Neanderthals, who seem obliged to publicly demonstrate what complete social inadequates they are.
Be careful to avoid the places these tts gravitate to.
To put things in perspective - the most likely place a tourist is at risk of being assaulted is an 'English' pub on North I-Drive - and the assailant is more likely to be a fellow British tourist than anyone else.

I / we normally go on holiday to escape from English louts and, so far, have never taken a package holiday, prefering to organise our own holiday. We're doing the same this year, just a bit further afield than Europe. Just wanted to find out what Orlando was like now after we'd been absent for quite a few years. Like I mentioned we're staying in a villa, so probably won't see much of the 'night-life'!

I'm sure the kids will enjoy the theme parks and I'll wince everytime I have to pay for it !

Get a grip mate. Everytime i go on holiday i make sure i have at least 2 if not 3 football shirts. I'm English and proud of it. I've met many people through wearing a footy shirt, fellow fans and just people who are curious to know which team i follow. I've never encountered any abuse from anyone nor started any trouble myself through the colours i wear abroad. Suppose your next question is gonna be 'do they still have them long lines of people near the rides? what are they called, o yeah, queues?

I seriously hope you dont let some footy shirts put you off from booking a fantastic holiday. And if you do go, dont forget your white socks and jc's mate.

Looking for a villa at the moment. Assuming the above areas are to be avoided which ones are nice. Would prefer somewhere around Orlando I think but open to persuasion. Also keen to avoid football shirts wink

Isn't Florida similar to walking through Manchester City Centre these days? Much like most of Spain... European's are much more pleasant to share a holiday with though.

I appreciate the irony, however it is also the only place to go to watch a space shuttle launch which is the purpose of my trip. Besides I am not necessarily turning my nose up at anyone other than those I may well turn my nose up at at home!

Shuttle launch on the 29th July is a big draw for me too.

Thanks for all the 'helpful' replies!

I saw a Shuttle launch in 1984, can still remember it vividly and was not to be missed.

As someone who regularly takes his holidays in the USA and at the risk of sounding a complete snob, Orlando has in my personal opinion gone down the proverbial pan over the last few years. Parts of International Drive are now akin to Benidorm, on the plus side you don't have the drinking culture that a large number of Brits seem hell bent on indulging in.

If you are going for the Shuttle experience why don't you consider looking around the Daytona Beach area, it's only an hour's drive to Orlando, great beaches and the extra added attraction of a tour around the Daytona Speedway (a must for all Petrolheads)or if it's Theme Parks you seek consider the Gulf Coast around Sarasota (one classy place) and not too far from Busch Gardens and still only 90 mins away from Disney.

If you are looking for a location where the dress code for Brits is Blazers and red corduroy, then Orlando is not one of them!

Have you considered that if the place that you are vacationing is full of chavs, then maybe YOU are a chav also? hehe

It's a family holiday and I've managed to get a villa on the other side of the I-4 to Disney. So although International Drive is not far away it's not too local (I think we're off the Bronson Memorial Highway) and I don't really want it to be!

Orlando is quite well placed to get to both coasts and I do have plans to go across to Daytona and Cocoa beaches and Clearwater on the other side.

I've been going to Orlando for 20 years and in all that time I can't recall seeing drunken yobs, fighting etc and I've never noticed hoardes of football shirt wearers. Having said that I've never set foot on International Drive!

The flight is probably the worst part - full of loud, fat, extended families that you just can't help wondering how on earth they can afford it.

The hordes of Brazilians who go at certain times of the year are the biggest
pain in the parks.

I did come within an ace of having a fight with a guy at DisneyLand Paris though. Wifey dragged me there once - never again, it's far too stressful.

No real "night life" in Orlando anymore. Pleasure Island has been shut down. Downtown is dying a slow death with only a few clubs that I would stay well clear of...

Organise your vacation well (get the parks maps ahead of time online) and it won't matter WHO else is there. By the way - your kids are at the perfect age for the whole family to have some fun. Old enough to go on the "more fun" rides.

I own no Burberry (fake or otherwise), Football shirts, oversized gold (fake) jewellery or Bench sportswear. My children are not called Britney, Chantelle or Jason.

Thank you for a sensible reply!

Tickets are 'in-hand', just need paying for, which is the worst bit. TBH I didn't realise how much they were going to cost for the whole family, even at 10 they're classed as adults in the parks.

EDIT : Nice Lotus BTW!
